How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language i
s a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other, and later they agreed on certain signs. These signs were called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words.

The power of words, then, exists in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, and the longer we live, the more certain words remind us of the glad and sad events of our past, and the more we read and learn, the more number of words increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which deeply attract our minds and emotions. This skillful use of words is called "literary style". Above all, a real poet can express his meaning in words which sing like music and can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them properly, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

The origin of language is______.

A.treasure handed down from the past

B.a matter that is hidden or secret

C.a problem not yet solved

D.a question difficult to answer

Most people do not think of fishes and other sea animals as having voices, and of those wh
o are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these "conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the ocean expanses (广阔的区域); others use their "voices" to let their fellows know of their locations; and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the difference between life and death to a sea animal. It appears in some cases that when a predator (食肉动物) approaches, the prey (被捕的动物) depends on no more than the sounds it makes to escape.

Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them, he can learn a great deal about the habits of creatures that make them, the size of the School they form, the patterns of their migrations, and the nature of the environments in which they live. He can also apply this information to the more effective utilization of the listening spots he has set up to detect enemy submarines (潜水艇). A knowledge of fish sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the sound sentry (哨兵) must decide whether or not to call an alarm.

Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few ______.

A.know the meaning of their conversations

B.realize that they can communicate with each other

C.realize that they can make speeches

D.could understand their conversations

Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to
send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance.

In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums (鼓). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles.

In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet (字母表). It was like spelling out words with flags and arms.

Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds.

According to this passage, the Roman way of communication depended very much on______.

A.fine weather

B.high tower

C.the spelling system

D.arm movements

All whales fall into two groups, those with teeth and those without. Both beluga and dolph
in belong to the suborder of toothed whales known as Odontoceti, along with porpoises, narwhals, pilot whales, killer whales and the largest toothed creature in the world, the sperm whale. Size differences among the Odontoceti are remarkable. A common porpoise will run only 4 or 5 feet in length and 300 pounds in weight; a sperm whale may be 10 times as long and 300 times as heavy. The beluga falls in between, weighing up to 2,000 pounds. And it does chirp. In fact, it makes a great variety of squeaking, whistling, and clicking sounds, which have earned it the name of sea canary.

The toothless, or baleen, whales belong to the suborder of Mysticeti. This is a group of generally large whales, formerly abundant in all the oceans of the world. Though reduced by hunting, most species are still found along the coasts of the United Stated and Canada. All but two of the Mysticeti reach 40 feet or more at maturity, with the blue whale running up to 100 feet and tipping the scales at up to 130 tons. This whale is by far the largest creature that has ever lived on earth, 4 times the weight of the largest dinosaur, 30 times that of an elephant.

With what topic is the passage mainly concerned?

A.Breeding habits of whales.

B.Differences between whales.

C.Efforts to preserve whales.

D.The intelligence of whales.

Unless we spend money spotting and preventing asteroids now, one might crash into Earth an
d destroy life as we know, say some scientists.

Asteroids are different forms of the meteoroids that race across the night sky. Most orbits the sun far from Earth and don't threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a violent coming course together with Earth.

Buy $ 50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10 mil]ion a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we'll have a way to change its course.

Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn't be cheap.

Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think asteroids big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare but if one did fall it would be the end of the world. "If we don't take care of these big asteroids, they'll take care of us. "Says one scientist. "Its that simple."

The cure, though, might be worse than the disease, Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons silting around on Earth? "The world has less to fear from doomsday rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them. "Said a New York Times article.

What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?

A.They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.

B.There are more asteroids than meteoroids.

C.They are heavenly bodies different in composition.

D.Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.
