根据以下内容回答题:

Each nation has its own peculiar character which distinguishes it from others. But the peo-pies of the world have more points in common than points in which they differ. One type of per-son that is common in evcry country is the one who always tries to do as littl.e as possible and to get as much as possible in return. His opposite, the man who is in the habit of doing more than is strictly necessary and who is ready to accept what is offered in return,is rare everywhere.

Both these tyDes are usually unconscious of their character. The man who avoids effort is always talking about his“rights”:he appears to think that society owes him a pleasant, easy life. The man who tries to do as little as he Call is always full of excuses:if he has neglected to do something,it was because he had a headache,or the weather was too hot——or too cold——or because he was prevented by bad luck.At first, other people, such as his friends and his em-ployer,generously accept his stories;but soon they realize what kind of person he is.In the long run he deceives only himself. When his friends become cool towards him and he fails to make progress in his job,he is surprised and hurt.He blames everyone and everything except himseIf.He feels that society is failing in its duties towards him,and that he is being unjustly treated.

根据以下内容回答题:

As contrasts go,there are few other pairs of culture as distinct from each other as the Japa-nese and the Americans.Japan’s many centuries of history and especially its Buddhist heritage have given the Japanese an attitude of repose(从容)——the best course is to let it be:When the time is ripe, things will work out by.themselves.America,on the other hand,is just a few centuries old and displays an almost volcanic liveliness and restlessness. For the Japanese, social harmony has a prior claim in every circumstance;for the Americans, harmony is the result of the rational interaction of free and fair-minded people. One does not lightly move from traditions in Japan, many of which are centuries old;in the United States, the habits and attitudes of even one’S parent’S generation are suspect. Every cuhure, through its legal and institutional arrangements, mirrors the society’S reso-lution of some basic human problems. These can provide a useful framework for the analysis of cuhural differences.Organizations also face the same problems and usually take their cue from the prevailing culture in designing solutions to these problems. This suggests that the perspec-tive provided by viewing cuhure through the framework of this problem will be useful for organi-zational analysis as well. The following sections present a discussion of such a framework in the context of the contrast between Japan and the United States. Before this is presented, however,we must alert the reader that the differences are stated here as being sharper than they may be in reality. On each of the aspects discussed later, there is naturally considerable variation within each culture, because examples demonstrating the cul-tural reality opposite to the one described in this book can be found easily. Thus, the following discussion should be viewed in the way it is presented,as generalizations and tendencies rather than as absolutes.

Cultural differences between the Japanese and the Americans are the__________ .

A.most obvious

B.slightest

C.Same

D.less suitable

根据以下内容回答题:

A tid.al wave is a very large and very destructive wall of water that rushes in from the ocean toward the shore. Many scientists call these huge waves tsunami(海啸).In Japanese tsunami means“storm wave”0r“tide”.But do you know that tidal waves are not caused bv storms and that they are not true tides at all?A true tide is the regular rise and fall of ocean waters,at def-inite times each day.But a tidal wave comes rushing in suddenly and unexpectedly.A tidal wave is caused by an underwater earthquake.Scientists call the underwater earthquake a seaquake. The word“seaquake”is made up of two words.the word’“sea”which means“ocean”and the word“quake”.To quake means“to shake”or“to tremble”.When a seaquake takes place at the bottom of the ocean, the ocean floor shakes and trembles, and sometimes the ocean floor shifts. It is this shifting that produces the tidal wave. The tidal wave begins to move across the sea at great speed. Tidal waves have taken many human lives in the past.Today scientists can predict when a tidal wave will hit land. They use a seismograph to do this.A seismograph is an instrument that records the strength, the direction, and the length of time of an earthquake or seaquake. It is not possible to hold back a tidal wave, but it is possible to warn people that a tidal wave is coming. This warning can save many lives.

According to the article, what causes a tidal wave?

A.The rise and fall of ocean water at regular times.

B.Seaquakes.

C.Storm.

D.The great speed of the ocean waves.

根据以下内容回答题:

How men first learned to invent words is unknown;in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things,SO that they could communicate with each other;and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which coul d be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken,or written in letters we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their combinationsmthe things they bring up before our minds.Words become filled with meaning for US by experience;and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past;and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts, but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style.Above all,the real poet is a master of words. He can con-vey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore leam to choose our words carefully and use them accurately or they will make our speech silly and rude.

The origin of language__________ . 查看材料

A.is reflected in sounds and letters

B.is handed down from generation to generation

C.dates back to the prehistoric period

D.is a problem not yet solved

根据以下内容回答题:

The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discu-ssion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces.1ess and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population.Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth val了from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources,it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate.Whatever the consequences may be.In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more Com-plex.A decreasing birth rate may lead tp unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened.Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which iS stable or in decline.

A smaller population may mean__________ .

A.higher productivity,but a lower average income

B.lower productivity,but a higher average income

C.lower productivity,and a lower average income

D.higher productivity,and a higher average income

根据以下内容回答题,

There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present,we realize that although these are the.areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldWide. On several occasions over the past decade,a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile tmmc.In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air poilu-tion.Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels(coal and oil)is creating a“greenhouse effect”——con-serving heat refleeted from the earth and raising the world’S average temperature. If this view is correct and the worid’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York,Boston,Miami, and New Orleans will be in water. Another view.1ess widely held,is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature——a result that would be equally disas-trous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age,and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top fanning areas.Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen(though one recent government report drafted bv experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is#cry possible).Perhaps,if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

As Dointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution__________ .

A.caused widespread damage in the countryside

B.affected the entire eastern half of the United States

C.had a damaging effect on health

D.existed merely in urban and industries areas

根据以下内容回答题:

The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport in the world.Every four years,a hundred or more countries send their best sportsmen to compete for the highest honors in sport.

As many as 6,000 people take part in over 20 sports. For the winners, there are gold medals and glory. But there is honor,t00,for all who compete, win or lose. That is the spirit of the Olympics--to take part is what matters.

The runner with the Olympic torch then enters the stadium and lights the flame.A sports-man from the host country takes the Olympic oath on behalf of all the competitors. The judges and officials also take an oath. After the sportsmen march out of the stadium, the host country puts on a wonderful display.

The competitions begin the next day. There are usually more than twenty sports in the Games. The mle is that there must be at least fifteen:The main events are in track and field, but it is a few days before these sports start. Each day the competitors take part in a different sport--riding,shooting,swimming,and cross-country runnin9.Points are gained for each event.Medals are awarded for the individual winners and for national teams.

More and more women are taking part in the games. They first competed in l900,in tennis and golf, which are no longer held in the Olympics.Women’s sw!mming events were in-troduced in 1912,but it was not until l928 that there were any track and field events for women.Now.they compete in all but half a dozen of the sports. In horse ridin9,shooting,and boat racing, they may compete in the same events as the men.

It is Dredicted that there will be four scientific breakthroughs in the 21 st centruy. We wiuknow where we came from.Since the l920s,scientists have known the universe is expanding, which means it must have started at a definite time in the past. They even have de-veloped theories that give a detailed picture of the universe from the time it was a fraction of a second old to the present.Over the next couple of decades, these theories will be improved by data from powerful new telescopes. We will find out the genetic code and conquer cancer. In l9th century operas, when the heroine coughs in the first act,the audience knows"she will die of tuberculosis in the third act.

But thanks to 20th century science, the once deadly disease now means nothing more serious than taking some pills. As scientists learn more about the genetic code and the way cells work, many serious desease——cancer.will become less threatening. We will live longer, probably up to 1 20 years. If the normal aging process is basically a fierce.invisible contest in our ceus——a contest between damage to our DNA and our ceils’abili-ty to repair that damage, gre{at progress around. But before we push scientists to do more,we should consider:do we really want to live in a world where no one grows old?We will haye a hrain road map. This is the real final frontier of the 21 st century. The brain is the most complex system we know.It contains about l00 billion nerve cells, each con-nected to as many as l000 0thers.Early in the 21 st century, progress in science will make it Dossible to produce detailed images of the nerve cells in operation. We will be able to say with certainty which ones are working when you read or think about a word.
