For example, in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there. For example, the ruble may be worth '0.75 on Monday and '0.72 on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at '0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a result, conversion may finally come at '0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.
A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict import. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

With the rapid globalization of food production and trade, international issues related to food safety are likely to increase. Food safety authorities all over the world have realized that food safety problems should be carried out at both national and international levels. There is a pressing need for exchanging routine information on food safety issues, and sharing experiences and information quickly when a food safety related event takes place.
INFOSAN is a joint program between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This global network includes 181 Member States. Each has a designated INFOSAN Emergency Contact Point which manages communication between national food safety authorities.
The network aims to:
Promote the rapid exchange of information during food safety related events;
Share information on important food safety related issues of global interest;
Promote partnership and cooperation between countries;
Help countries strengthen their capacity to manage food safety risks.
As part of its routine activities, the INFOSAN Secretariat publishes reports in six languages and provides members with summaries and guidance on relevant food safety issues.
INFOSAN helps exchange food safety information and experience among its members. It is also a useful resource for other public health organizations which recognize INFOSAN as an organization through which findings of investigations and strategies for improving food safety may be shared.

Modern international trading practices are highlighting the growing importance of language training.
Modern-day business really does transcend national barriers．Thanks to sophisticated IT and communications systems, businesses can now market their products on a truly global scale．The world is indisputably becoming a smaller place, as service and manufacturing companies search the international marketplace for new suppliers and clients．Businesses must, however, be aware that once they expand the area in which they operate, they face increased competition．The standard and quality of their goods become increasingly important in keeping up with competitors．But most of all, it is the service element accompanying the goods which is crucial to a company&39;s success in a particular market．This new philosophy has led to many companies, some of which have even offered products of a lesser quality, gaining success overseas.
Although globalization may, in some senses, have brought national economies closer together, societies around the world still have radically different expectations, processes and standards．These are not a function of economic change, but are more deep-rooted and difficult to alter．They can be a major problem for businesses expanding abroad, with the greatest obstacle of all being the language barrier．If you have to deal with clients, suppliers and distributors in a range of countries, you will not only need the skills to communicate with them, you will also need to reconcile any national biases you have with the diverse ways of doing business that exist around the globe.
The value of effective communication is not to be underestimated．New technology such as video-conferencing and email has played a part in making the communication process easier and it may also be possible that the introduction of language interpretation software will help with some global communications problems．But, of course, it is the human element of the communication process that is so vital in business, especially in negotiations, presentations and team-building．It is essential for managers to meet regularly with staff, customers and partners, so that issues can be discussed, messages communicated and feedback obtained．The value of well-organized language training is immense, and can bring benefits to all levels and departments within a multinational organization．Unfortunately, however, many organizations have a very narrow view when it comes to training of any kind．Often, an urgent requirement has to be identified before training is authorized．Then, a training company is employed or a programme is developed in-house, the team is trained, and that is seen as the end of the matter．However, the fact remains that training programmes are effective only if they are relevant to a company&39;s broader, long-term needs．They should be regarded as an investment rather than a cost.

Passage One
Wild and farm birds often get a flu virus. Yet they usually are able to carry the virus without getting sick.
In 1997 six people in Hong Kong died of a different kind of bird flu virus. It is called the h-five-n-one virus. The Hong Kong government quickly ordered the killing of all farm birds there. That stopped the spread of h-five-n-one to people in Hong Kong.
Yet the virus bad already spread to other parts of Asia. It was found in 16 countries between 2003 and 2006.
The h-five-n-one virus first appeared in Africa. This raised many concerns about the spread of the disease. Scientists do not know exactly how bird flu came to Africa. At first, they thought wild birds were to blame. Now, officials with the U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization believe the main cause is trade in farm birds.
The bird flu virus is found in the waste and liquids of infected birds. The virus spreads when healthy birds or people touch sick birds or nay infected (被感染了的) part of sick birds. Right now, the virus is not spreading among person to person. But the virus could change and start spreading among people. Health officials believe that it is even more possible now that bird flu has spread in Africa, and that is why international organizations are working so hard to stop its spread.
The best way to stop the spread of bird flu is to kill all the chickens in an area where bird flu has been discovered. More than 145 000 chickens have been killed in Nigeria since bird fin was first found one year ago.
