听力原文:M: You should have seen the line at the housing office. It took me an hour to mak
e my dormitory deposit for next year. Have you made yours yet?

W: No, I'm not sure I'm going to.

M: There's not much time left. The deadline's May 1. That is just two weeks from now. Are you short of cash.

W: No, I'm Okay.

M: You'd better hurry up if you want a dorm room next September. There aren't enough rooms for every one, and first-year students have priority.

W: Well, I've been thinking about living off campus.

M: Have you any idea how much that would cost? There is the rent, utilities, and you'd probably need a car.

W: I know it would be more expensive. I think I can handle it though. The dorm is just so noisy that I can't get anything done. Maybe my grades would be better if I had some peace and quiet in a place of my own.

M: You should study in the library the way I do. Think of the money you'd save.

W: I've got to think it over some more. There's still two weeks left in April.

I remember my first night on campus, __1__ on a hard and slightly stained mattress, surr

It was as if I had literally been __3__ into another world, and in a way I had: One day I had been at home in the suburban town where I’d lived for 18 years and knew everyone, and the next day I had moved into a tiny room in a huge city across the country where I didn’t know anyone. I had always thought there would be a neat __4__ between my previous self and my college self, but it turns out identity is more __5__ than that.

It was strange to feel my past life almost __6__ away as I entered this brand-new phase of my life. I didn’t know how to __7__ myself during my first couple of months at Penn because everything that defined me was back in California. I felt __8__ from my college friends because they only knew the college me. How could they really know me without knowing what Mission Boulevard looked like late at night with the Niles hills in the background? How could they know me without knowing the friends who I had __9__ to Japan with or the friends I had gone to school with since kindergarten? How could they know me if they hadn’t met my family? Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are horn and not made. Altho
ugh we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.

Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystalclear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.

I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people's observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers, and books, which some might honour with the title of scientific research.

But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one the outstanding and essential qualities required is se]f-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.

The first paragraph tells us the author ______. ()

A.was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood

B.lost his hearing when he was a child

C.didn't like his brothers and sisters

D.was born to a naturalist's family

My son, Johnny, opened a new restaurant, and on the opening day I helped out in the kitche
n. By mid-morning, I noticed that the cakes we had ordered hadn't come. Johnny and I decided not to tell it to anyone else, hoping that the cakes would arrive soon.

They still hadn't come when, just before noon, a man eating in our restaurant wanted a cake. I suggested that I run to the bakery next door to get some, and Johnny readily agreed. Going out of our back door, I knocked on the back door of the bakery and bought a few from the baker's helper. That cake was the only one we sold all day.

After closing, Johnny and I sat discussing things with my daughter, who had been out from serving. "An interesting thing happened just before noon," she said. "The owner of the bakery next door came in and ordered a cake of ours. She wanted to compare it with hers."

We know from the passage that ______.

A.the baker next door came to help with the opening

B.the new restaurant did not prepare all its foods

C.the son and the daughter served at the tables

D.the customers enjoyed the cakes very much

Roger lived in the city of London, and his hair was always cut by the same old man. He alw
ays cut Roger's hair as Roger liked it, and while he was doing it, the two men talked about football.

One day, when Roger was sitting in his chair, and his hair was being cut as usual, the old man said to him, "Roger, I'm going to be seventy years old next month and I feel tired, so I'm going to sell my shop to a young man. He liked to cut hair for people."

Roger was sorry to hear that, because he enjoyed talking to the old man, and he was also worried that his hair would not be cut as well by the new young man as it had been for so many years by his old friend.

He went to the shop again the next month, and the new young man was there. He cut Roger's hair, but he did it badly.

The next month, Roger went into the shop again. The young man asked him how he would like his hair cut, and Roger answered, "Please cut it very short on the right side, but leave it as it is on the left. It must cover my ear. On top, cut all the hair away in the middle, but leave a piece at the front."

The young man was very surprised when he heard this, "But sir," he said, "I can't cut your hair like that!" "Why not?" Roger asked. "That's how you cut it last time."

Who always cut Roger's hair?

A.His new friend.

B.A young man.

C.An old woman.

D.His old friend.
