There is more to school education than instruction and passing knowledge. To live up to hi
s or her image, a teacher at an elementary or secondary school has to have positive influence on the pupils in terms of manners, attitudes and views of life. There is reason to claim that a teacher is a parent, consultant and role model all rolled into one. When a teacher has become someone to talk to, turn to and correspond to, his role as a friend is highlighted. Accompanied by teachers who are considerate, helpful and responsible, a child is likely to be impressed by such good qualities and eventually does the same to others. However, it is no easy job to be a successful teacher. Effective lecturing calls for experience, the sense of humor, devotion and an intimate knowledge of the subject. In China, admission to college is highly competitive, making it necessary for parents to enable their children to study under the best possible teachers to increase the chance of being admitted by well-known institutions of higher learning.

American has long been considered the land of opportunity by those from other countries. A
mericans, too, believe that the United States provides almost limifiess opportunity for those who want to open businesses on their own.

Today, Americans are still fond of trying their hand at becoming small business people, even though only one out of two survives the first two years. Many of these people start their businesses for the wrong reasons: to get away from the paper work of their present jobs or to exchange the responsibility of their present jobs for freer life styles. But more, not less, paper work and responsibility come with ownership of a small business. John Shuttleworth, owner of the recently successful life-ecology news magazine Mother Earth, reports having had to work sixty hours straight in order to bring out the first issue.

John Shuttleworth waited years after conceiving the idea for Mother Earth before he attempted to put out the first issue. During that time, he collected as much information as he could about his proposed venture. He borrowed books about business from the library; he talked to people already established in the field; and he began planning in detail the amount of money and the kinds and numbers of supplies he would need. When he finally opened with a capital of $1,500, he set up his office in the kitchen of his home and his printing press in the garage. Due to his devotion to business his managerial skill, and his talent, Mother Earth now has a circulation of 300,000:

Not all small business succeed as well as Mother Earth has. Fifty percent of the 450,000 that start in the United States every year fail. Still, ninety-five percent businesses in the States can be described as small. Combined, these businesses account for forty percent of America's gross national product.

According to this passage, many people start their own businesses for the wrong reasons. The reasons are wrong because they do not realize that ______.

A.their own businesses will provide large income but less responsibility

B.their own businesses will not relieve them from paper work and responsibility

C.their own businesses will require longer working hours but less paper work

D.their own businesses could easily fail

My mother never let herself get down. No matter how bad things were, she stayed cheerful.
Even though we had a hard life, she still maintained the attitude that everything was fine. I remember her coming home tired from her job at the restaurant and saying that we were lucky. We didn't have a lot of clothes or toys, but my mother always made sure we had enough to eat.

Her love and devotion for my brother and me made our lack of material possessions seem insignificant. Even today, if I were given a choice between having love at home and wealth, I would want it just the way I had it. I grew up poor in material things but rich in love.

Since my father was never around long enough to teach me physical things or to play games with me, I didn't succeed in any competitive sport. My mother did her best as a substitute, throwing a ball with me in the lot(空地) behind our house, but it wasn't the same. She was too protective of me, and I didn't have enough confidence in my own abilities to really try anything physically demanding.

The story suggests that the author is______his mother.

A.proud of

B.worried about

C.pitiful for

D.concerned about

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

What are the specific traits that will assist executives to climb the ladder of success? Opinions vary widely. Given approximately equal qualifications and circumstances, some claim the success factor is largely a matter of luck-being in the right place at the right time. Others speak of an almost crazy devotion to work, combined with a degree of ruthlessness. One “expert” maintains that it's undoubtedly a matter of how much education your mother had.

To make it big, executives must possess four basic skills:

First, drive. Business success takes an unusual amount of energy. A successful executive-almost by definition-is a striver. He will get tense when he is not striving.

Second, people sense. Some say being able to judge people is more important than a high IQ. The skill can be instinctual(本能的),but in most cases it is painstakingly learned.

Third, communications ability. Different executives make themselves understood in different ways. Some transmit ideas best face to face;others are masters of the telephone call;still others are persuasive writers. One way or another, they all communicate clearly.

Fourth, calm under pressure. No businessman will get very far if he chokes up.

Some people claim that besides hard work, the success also requires______.

A. equal qualifications

B. specific traits

C. much education

D. a degree of cruelty
