Culture shock is an occupational disease (职业病) for people who have been suddenly transplanted abroad.

Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. Those signs are as following: How to shake hands and what to say when meeting people, when and how to give tips, how to make purchases, when to accept and refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, or customs, are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend on hundreds of these signs for the peace of our mind and day-to-day efficiency, but we do not carry most at the level of conscious awareness.

Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar signs are removed. No matter how broadminded or full of good will you may be, a series of supports have been knocked from under you, followed by a feeling of frustration. When suffering from culture shock people first reject the environment which causes discomfort. The ways of the host country are bad Because they make us feel bad. When foreigners on a strange land get together to complain about the host country and its people, you can be sure that they are suffering from culture shock.

According to the passage, culture shock is______.

A.an occupational disease of foreign people

B.may lead to very serious symptoms

C.actually not a disease

D.incurable

When you put up your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask a question. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "no". A sign on the door tells you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you get messages from them all the time?

People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell about all the things in the world and also about people and their ideas.

There is one thing that everyone wants more than anything else. Some people try to get it
by making money. They think that when they have enough money to buy such things as houses, farms, and cars, they will have the one thing that everyone wants.

Other people believe that if they know enough they will find this thing. They study all their lives in search of it. Still others think that if they have power, they will find this thing. They keep telling themselves: when I am a boss, I will no longer have to search for this thing.

What is it that everyone wants more than anything else? What is it that all of us keep working and striving for each day? It is happiness.

Happiness is a strange thing. It does not mean the same to all men. What will make one man happy may not make another man happy. Some men say that happiness comes from helping others; other men say that happiness comes from making life more pleasant for everyone. What do you mean when you say: "That makes me happy?"

Read what different people have said about happiness. Perhaps you will learn something that will bring you peace of mind, comfort, money or it may bring you what you search for -- happiness.

The main idea of the above article is ______.

A.Happiness means the same to everyone

B.Happiness is the thing that everyone wants most of all

C.Money makes one happy, so does helping others

D.Both A and C

Every culture and every country in the world celebrates New Year, but not everyone does it
the same way. The countries in North America and Europe welcome New Year on January the first. This practice began with the Romans in the Middle East, New Year is when spring begins. People in China and Vietnam celebrate it on the first day of the Spring Festival, which is the first day of their calendar based on the moon. Rosh Hashana, which is the Jewish (犹太人的) New Year, comes at the end of summer. The Hindus (印度教教徒 ) in India celebrate the first day of each season, so they have four New Years.

Friends often gather together at a party on New Year's Eve, and when the new year comes, all ring bells, blow' whistles, sing songs, and kiss each other. A favorite Scottish song which everyone sings together is Auld Lang Sync. The words tell of old friends and good times.

In all cultures, New Year's Day is a time when people think of new beginnings. They want to make the coming year better than the last one. Many people in the United States make New Year resolutions. If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are proba
bly a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A famous scientist concluded that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities, and that cool weather is much more favourable for creative thinking than in summer heat. This does not mean all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large members of people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Autumn is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

Generally speaking, it is far fitter for creative thinking when the weather is ______ .

A.sunny and fine

B.windy and rainy

C.warm and wet

D.neither cold nor hot

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes
are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? .... When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it' s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don' t really listen closely we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You' re a lucky dog." That' s being friendly. But "lucky dog?" There' s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn' t see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn' t think you deserve your luck.

"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn' t important. It' s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone' s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

This passage is mainly about ______.

A.how to interpret what people say

B.what to do when. you listen to others talking

C.how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people

D.why we go wrong with people sometimes

Today, these so-called bank credit cards have become very popular. They can be used in sto
res, hotels, and restaurants all over the world. And, they can be used to pay for all kinds of unusual goods and services, including car repairs, hospital care and accident or life insurance.

Credit cards offer two major services. First, they are easier and safer to carry than large amounts of money. Second, they permit people to borrow-to buy things they want even when they do not have enough money to pay the full price. Credit cards make it possible to spread out payments over weeks or months.

To receive credit cards, people must prove that they earn enough to pay for whai they buy. And they usually must prove that they have paid back any money they borrowed in the past. Then, after they receive the card, credit cmnpanies limit how much they can buy with it. Visa and Mastercard, for example, do not permit most of their users to owe more than $ 1,500. Yet even with these restrictions(限制), credit cards often make it too easy for people to spend the money they cannot pay back.

With credit cards, people pay for goods or services at the end of each month, instead of when they buy them. And when the time does come to pay, most credit cards offer people a choice. They can pay all of what they owe for the month. Or they can pay just part usually between five and ten percent of what they owe.

Studies of credit card use have found tha! each month, about half of all card users pay the full amount they owe. The others pay only part of the amount. It is this group that pro- vides credit, card companies with most of their earnings. That is because the people pay a service charge—"interest"—for the right to postpone full payment. Most pay an interest rate of about 19 percent a year of what they owe. In the last few years, there has been increasing criticism of high interest rates on credit cards. The use of credit cards continues to increase. Some people say that in the near future credit cards will replace money completely, but others believe that event is unlikely. However, they think Americans will be using credit cards more and more. A major reason for this is the increasing fear of crime. Credit cards—unlike real money—can be replaced if they are lost or stolen.

With a credit card one can buy things______.

A.one can never afford

B.without using cash

C.at lower prices

D.which cannot be bought with cash
