阅读:Telephone, television, radio, and telegraph all help people communicate with each other

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

Telephone, television, radio, and telegraph all help people communicate with each other. Because of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set.News of a disaster such as an earthquake or a flood can bring help from distant countries within hours, help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites that travel around the world, information travels fast.

How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the ocean. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries,it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced people's actions. For example, one battle, or fight, in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty had been signed. They would not have died if news had come in time.In the past, communication took much time than it does now.

There was a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.

31. News spreads fast because of____.

A.modern transportation B.new technology C.the change of the world D.a peace agreement 

32. According to this passage,____is very important to people in a disaster area.

33. Which of the following statements is true?

A.The world now seems smaller because of faster communication.

B.The world is actually smaller today.

C.The world is changing its size.

D. The distance between England and America has changed since the War of 1812 

34. Two hundred years ago, news between the continents was carried____.

A.by telephone and telegraph B.by land C.by air D.by sea 

35. The New Orleans Battle could have been avoided if the peace agreement had been signed____.

There is no creature that does not need sleep or complete rest every day.

If you want to know why, just try going without sleep for a long period of time. You will discover that your mind and body would become too tired to work properly. You would become irritable and find it hard to think clearly or concentrate on your work. So sleep is quite simply the time when the cells of your body recover from the work of the day and build up supplies of energy for the next period of activity.

One of the things we all know about sleep is that we are unconscious in sleep. We do not know what is going on around us. But that doesn't mean the body stops all activity. The important organs continue to work during sleep, but most of the body functions are slowed down.

For example, our breathing becomes slower and deeper. The heart beats more slowly, and the blood pressure is lower. Our arms and legs become limp(柔软的) and muscles are at rest. It would be impossible for our body to relax to such an extent if we were awake. So sleep does for us what the most quiet rest can not do.

Your body temperature becomes lower when you are asleep, which is the reason people go to sleep under some kind of covers. And even though you are unconscious, many of your reflexes(习惯性思维) still work. For instance, if someone tickles(使觉得痒) your foot, you will put it away in your sleep, or even brush a fly from your forehead. You do these things without knowing it.

If you don't have as much sleep as your body needs, you will ______.

A.work properly

B.think clearly

C.keep your attention on your work

D.easily get angry

Why do people shrink?

Did you ever see the movie Honey,I shrunk the kids? It’s about a wacky dad(who’s also a scientist)wh0 accidentally shrinks his kids with his homemade miniaturizing invention.0ops! ____(1).

For older people, shrinking isn’t that dramatic or sudden at all. It takes place over years and may add up to only one inch or so off of their adult height(maybe a 1ittle more, maybe less), and this kind of shrinking can’t be magically reversed, although there are things that can be done to stop it or slow it down._____(2).

There are a flew reasons. As people get older, they generally lose some muscle and flat from their bodies as part of the natural aging process.Gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) take hold, and the bones in the spine, called vertebrae, may break down or degenerate, and start to collapse into one another_____ (3).But perhaps the most common reason why some older people shrink is because

of osteoporosis.

0steoporosis occurs when too much spongy bone tissue(which is found inside of most bones)is broken down and not enough new bone material is made.______(4). Bones become smaller and weaker and can easily break if someone with osteoporosis is injured. Older people—especially women, who generally have smaller and lighter bones to begin with--are more likely to develop osteoporosis. As years go by,a person with osteoporosis shrinks a little bit.

Did you know that every day you do a shrinking act? You aren’t as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning. That’s because as the day goes on,water in the disks of the spine gets compressed(squeezed)due to gravity, making you just a tiny bit shorter.Don’t worry,though._____(5)

A.They end up pressing closer together, which makes a person lose a little height and become shorter.

B.0rice you get a good night’s rest, your body recovers, and the next morning, you’re standing tall again. C.0ver time.bone is said to be lost because it’s not being replaced.

D.Luckily, there are things that people cab do to prevent shrinking.

E.The kids spend the rest of the movie as tiny people who are barely Visible while trying to get back to their normal size.

F.But why does shrinking happen at all ?

Door-Knocking

Door-knocking is the most effective way of making face-to-face community contact, but it has become a lost art. With the recent focus on customer privacy, door-knocking seems like an intrusion into other people' s lives. But those who try it for the first time are usually surprised by the pleasant reception they receive. Here are some suggestions that will help you promote your services face-toface.

BEFORE YOU GO OUT

◆ Begin with a door hanger

Try leaving a door hanger two days before you go door-knocking. It should briefly describe the project and say that someone will be around in person.

◆ Wear an official name tag

Door-knockers should wear name tags with the logo of their organization. The best name tags will also include a color photo and the name of the caller.

◆ Have people knock their own blocks

The easiest way to do door-knocking is to try your local area first. Being a neighbor creates an immediate connection with the person answering the door; after that, everything else is easy.

◆ Find a good excuse to door-knock

A short survey about local concerns or a current project is a good excuse. Figure out responses for various situations. What if the person who answers the door cannot speak English? What if a child answers the door?

WHEN YOU GO OUT

◆ When to go and what to do first

The best times to knock are usually Saturdays. On other days, after dinner is ideal. When someone answers the door, smile and introduce yourself; say you are a volunteer and, if it helps, state where you live. Give the name of your organization and, briefly, the reason for the visit.

◆ State what action the other person should take and the benefits

Tell the person what they need to do and how their actions will benefit themselves and others. If a person hesitates, emphasize benefits you' ve already mentioned and then, if necessary, add further benefits. If a person agrees, follow up immediately. If possible, get a donation,a signature, or a promise.

◆ Record contact information on the spot

Record names, addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and responses to questions on the spot. You won' t remember them later!

(1)Why does the author say that door-knocking has become a lost art?

A. It is not effective, no one will take this method any more.

B. People focus on privacy increasingly, so door-knocking seems like an intrusion into other people' s lives

C. It is very difficult to do door-knocking, no one knows how to do it now.

(2) Which step should be firstly taken when you try door-knocking?

A. Find a good excuse to door-knock

B. Wear an official name tag

C. Leave a door hanger

(3) What does the underlined phrase “on the spot” mean?

A. without delay

B. at some place

C. in a difficult situation

(4) Which time is not appropriate for door knocking?

A. Saturday afternoon

B. Monday morning.

C. Thursday evening.

(5) Who will receive pleasant reception when they try door-knocking?

A. A stranger who is not living in this community and gives no notice for his/her visit.

B. An offensive acquaintance who comes at any time.

C. A neighbor who does good preparation and has significant project to introduce.
