What would you do with 590m? This is now a question for Gloria Mackenzie, an 84-year-old w
idow who recently emerged from her small, tin-roofed house in Florida to collect the biggest undivided lottery jackpot in history. If she hopes her new-found for tune will yield lasting feelings of fulfillment, she could do worse than read Happy Money by Elizabeth Dumn and Michael Norton.

These two academics use an array of behavioral research to show that the most rewarding ways to spend money can be counterintuitive. Fantasies of great wealth often involve visions of fancy cars and extravagant homes. Yet satisfaction with these material purchases wears off fairly quickly what was once exciting and new becomes old-hat; regret creeps in. It is far better to spend money on experiences, say Ms Dumn and Mr Norton, like interesting trips, unique meals or even going to the cinema. These purchases often become more valuable with time-as stories or memories-particularly if they involve feeling more connected to others.

This slim volume is packed with tips to help wage slaves as well as lottery winners get the most "happiness bang for your buck." It seems most people would be better off if they could shorten their commutes to work, spend more time with friends and family and less of it watching television (something the average American spends a whopping two months a year doing, and is hardly jollier for it).Buying gifts or giving to charity is often more pleasurable than purchasing things for oneself, and luxuries are most enjoyable when they are consumed sparingly. This is apparently the reason MacDonald&39;s restricts the availability of its popular McRib - a marketing trick that has turned the pork sandwich into an object of obsession.

Readers of “Happy Money” are clearly a privileged lot, anxious about fulfillment, not hunger.Money may not quite buy happiness, but people in wealthier countries are generally happier than those in poor ones. Yet the link between feeling good and spending money on others can be seen among rich and poor people around the world, and scarcity enhances the pleasure of most things for most people. Not everyone will agree with the authors’ policy ideas, which range from mandating more holiday time to reducing tax incentives for American homebuyers. But most people will come away from this book believing it was money well spent.

According to Dumn and Norton, which of the following is the most rewarding purchase?

B.A special tour

C.A stylish car

D.A rich meal

Three friends decided to sail around the world in a small yacht(游艇). They loaded it with food and water and set off. They traveled to many beautiful places, and were having a wonderful time.

Until one day, when they had been at sea for about a month, a fierce storm blew up.

Great waves crashed(坠毁)down on their little yacht. The mast(船桅) broke and the yacht was soon thrown against some rocks near a deserted island.

The three men were able to struggle to the island, taking with them as much food as they could carry. Not a tree, not a bush, not a flower grew on the island. There was not an animal of any kind, not even a bird or an insect. For a few weeks the three men were able to live on the food they had saved, but at last it was gone--except for one piece of bread. They decided that whoever had the best dream the next night could have the bread. The next morning they took turns describing their dreams.

The first man said that he had dreamed he was in the world's most beautiful restaurant and he had eaten the finest meal of his life and drunk some of the finest wines. He said it was one of the best dreams he had ever had.

The second man described how he had dreamed about a magic carpet. Sitting on this car- pet, he had traveled to all the wonderful places in the world and been the guest of great kings and queens. It had been a truly exciting dream.

The men who had described their dreams then turned to the third man. "Tell us your dream," they said. "My dream was very simple," he said. "I dreamed that the bread was go- ing bad and would soon be moldy(发霉). 1 didn't want to waste the bread, so as soon as I woke up I ate it.

The three men took______.

A.many souvenirs(纪念品) with them

B.no medical supplies with them

C.a large crew with them

D.many provisions(食物贮备) with them

It is 2 a. m. You took too long over dinner, the coast is still a couple of hundred kilome
ters away and it is essential to get that early morning ferry. And your car radiator pipe has split. At times like that, the documents making up your insurance kit lying in the front of your car seem useless. The nearest phone was passed three kilometers back, and it would be reasonable to expect some delay in getting breakdown assistance when you have finally phoned through.

If on the other hand, you've got a spare in the car, five minutes' work should see you on your way again. The majority of breakdowns do involve minor and easily changed parts. A few basic tools and the right mix of spares are well worth the space they take up. But to sort out which ones are mast likely to be needed, and to buy them, can be expensive.

That is why the motoring organizations have come up with rental kits. For about 50 pence a day (slightly more to non-members)they will supply a boxed range of spares for a given car. On returning the kit the motorist pays for any that are used, plus a small fee for repacking. Deposits are about £ 20.

It is much better, however, to reduce the risk of breakdowns by seeing that your car is properly serviced before setting out. Particularly when driving at high speed over long distances in hot weather.

Finally, it makes sense to purchase a safety triangle and an emergency plastic windscreen before leaving. Make sure all your fellow travellers know where your documents are; give one a spare set of keys, and slip into the back of your wallet a large banknote for the emergencies where a credit card won't do.

While on a motoring holiday abroad you might find yourself in difficulties because ______. ()

A.you have brought the wrong documents with you

B.your ferry has just left without you

C.the nearest phone is out of order

D.a repair to your car might take some time

The management of logistical (物流的) operation is about movement and storage of materials

The management of logistical (物流的) operation is about movement and storage of materials and finished products. Logistical operations start with the initial shipment of a material or component part from a supplier and are finished when a manufactured or processed product is delivered to a customer.

From the initial purchase of a material or component, the logistical process adds value by moving inventory (移动库存) when and where needed. If all goes well, a material gains value at each step of its transformation into finished inventory. In other words, an individual part has greater value after it is put into a machine. Likewise, the machine has greater value once it is delivered to a buyer.

To support manufacturing, work-in-process inventory must be moved to support final assembly. The cost of each component and its movement becomes part of the value-added process. The final or meaningful value that is added occurs only with final ownership transfer of products to customers when and where specified.

For a large manufacturer, logistical operations may consist of thousands of movements, which finally develop into the delivery of products to an industrial user, retailer, wholesaler, dealer, or other customer. For a large retailer, logistical operations may start with gaining products for resale and may finish with consumer pickup or delivery. For a hospital, logistics starts with purchasing and ends with full support of patient surgery and recovery. The significant point is that regardless of the size and type of enterprise, logistics is essential and requires continuous management attention. For better understanding it is useful to divide logistical operations into three areas: physical distribution, manufacturing support, and procurement(筹措、采购) .

Logistical operations are concerned with______.

A.transfer of materials and finished products

B.manufacturing of materials and finished products

C.inventory of materials and finished products

D.both A and C
