The killer bees are coming! By the time you read this they will have reached Texas. By the
mid-1990s, they will have reached all the warmer areas of the United States. Scientists as well as farmers wait for them with a mixture of fear and wonder.

The killer bees should not be coming at all. Nature did not put them on this direct path for the United States; human beings did. The killer bees are from Africa. But in 1957 a scientist from Brazil got some of these killer bees for his experiments. The aim was to produce a better bee. However, an accident happened: a guest beekeeper let twenty-six of the queen bees escape by mistake. Before long, groups of killer bees took off for the woods.

Since that time, the wild killer bees have multiplied(繁衍) many times over. By 1998, their population was over 1015. They have spread all over South America, Central America, and most of Mexico. The United States is the next stop.

Are the killer bees really killers? Yes, they are. In their first thirty years in America, they have killed thousands of hens, pigs, and other animals. While no one knows the exact number, it is believed that several hundred people have also been killed.

So be careful. Killer bees are on the way. Scientists have no idea what to do with them yet. There must be a way.

We know from the passage that killer bees will spread to the United States ______.

A.from north

B.from south

C.from west

D.from east

This is not the world we know. This world is controlled by computers. Men and women can
be seen, but they are following the orders given to them by machines. The machines were designed by mad scientists, but at some point even the mad scientists were taken over by their super-inventions.

Does this sound familiar? You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film. Why is it so popular? One of the reasons is that it reflects the fears of many people; fear of the unknown fear of what is not understood or, at least, fear of something that is not completely understood.

The fact is that every day it seems that computers take control of another area of our lives. Some

factory jobs are now done by robots and the robots are controlled by computers. Our bank accounts are managed by computers. At the airport, our tickets are sold by a computer. Certainly, many of these operations are made more

efficient by computers, but our admiration is sometimes mixed with unsafe feelings. And this lack of safety is caused by the fact that we do not know how computers do these things, and we really don't know what they might do next. But we can find out how computers work, and once we understand them, we can use computers instead of worrying about being used by them. Today, there is a new generation of computer wizards who know exactly how computers get things done. These young men and women, usually university students, are happy to sit for hours, sometimes for days, designing programs, not eating, not sleeping, but discovering what can be done by these wonderful slaves which they have learned to control. These computer wizards have learned to use the computer and search for new tasks for their machines.

(1)、According to the passage, our present world is under the control of ______ .

A:mad scientists

B:men and women

C:the unknown fear

D:some super-inventions

(2)、The reason why many people are afraid of computers is that ______ .

A:they don't know anything about computers

B:they haven't really understood computers

C:there are so many computer games

D:computers are often down

(3)、The author mentions computer wizards in order to point out that ______ .

A:computers can be controlled by man

B:there should be more people devoted to computers

C:only young people are interested in computers

D:more time and energy is required to control computers

(4)、This passage is probably written to suggest that ______ .

A:some day computers can deal with all human problems

B:computers can be used in place of traveling to our jobs

C:people should not fear computers

D:computer technology will not meet people's needs in various situations

(5)、The author's attitude towards widely used computers is __.

A:positive

B:anxious

C:worried

D:serious

The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around u
s. Sound has a waster product, too, in the form. of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better.

Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully.

There is a saying that it is so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems.

Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress.

But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night!

Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it.

Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?

A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy.

B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution.

C.Because noise is an unwanted waste for human beings.

D.Because people knew little about noise before.

It is Dredicted that there will be four scientific breakthroughs in the 21 st centruy. We wiuknow where we came from.Since the l920s,scientists have known the universe is expanding, which means it must have started at a definite time in the past. They even have de-veloped theories that give a detailed picture of the universe from the time it was a fraction of a second old to the present.Over the next couple of decades, these theories will be improved by data from powerful new telescopes. We will find out the genetic code and conquer cancer. In l9th century operas, when the heroine coughs in the first act,the audience knows"she will die of tuberculosis in the third act.

But thanks to 20th century science, the once deadly disease now means nothing more serious than taking some pills. As scientists learn more about the genetic code and the way cells work, many serious desease——cancer.will become less threatening. We will live longer, probably up to 1 20 years. If the normal aging process is basically a fierce.invisible contest in our ceus——a contest between damage to our DNA and our ceils’abili-ty to repair that damage, gre{at progress around. But before we push scientists to do more,we should consider:do we really want to live in a world where no one grows old?We will haye a hrain road map. This is the real final frontier of the 21 st century. The brain is the most complex system we know.It contains about l00 billion nerve cells, each con-nected to as many as l000 0thers.Early in the 21 st century, progress in science will make it Dossible to produce detailed images of the nerve cells in operation. We will be able to say with certainty which ones are working when you read or think about a word.

"Culture consists of all shared products of human society" (Robertson, 1981 ). This means

"Culture consists of all shared products of human society" (Robertson, 1981 ). This means not only such material things as cities, organizations and schools, but also non-material things such as ideas, customs, family patterns, languages. Putting it simply, culture refers to the entire way of life of a society, "the ways of a people".

Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. Some social scientists consider it the keystone of culture. Without language, the maintaining of culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture, it reflects culture. In the broadest sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises their historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as their approach to life and their ways of living and thinking.

We should not go further into the relationship between language and culture. What needs to be stressed here is that the two interact, and that understanding of one requires understanding of the other.

Social scientists tell us that cultures differ from one another, that each culture is unique. As cultures are diverse, so languages are diverse. It is only natural then that with differences in cultures and differences in languages, difficulties often arise in communicating between cultures and across cultures. Understanding is not always easy.

Learning a foreign language well means more than merely mastering the pronunciation, gram mar, words and idioms. It means learning also to see the world . as native speakers of that language see it, learning the ways in which their language reflects the ideas, customs, and behaviors of their society, learning to understand their "language of the mind". Learning a language, in fact, is inseparable from learning its culture.

According to the first paragraph, the term "culture" refers to ______.

A.things like cities, organizations and schools

B.ideas, customs, family patterns, and languages

C.all things produced by human race

D.the total that constitute a society

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a hig
h school diploma (文凭) or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.

Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics (技师) and barbers (理发师) can take classes to improve their work skills. . If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.

Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available.

Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.

Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evenings, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.

The new idea about education in the U. S. is that______ .

A.everyone should get a college degree

B.it's no use for adults to go to college

C.a high school diploma is the end of education

D.adults should go on learning after graduating from school

The latest finding comes from nutrition and immunology respected: Vitamin E boosts the immune system in older people. In an eight-month study of 88 seniors, the scientists found that those taking at least 200 international units of Vitamin E daily had stronger immune responses than those taking little or none. Alzheimer's disease. Researchers tracked 341 moderately senile patients. Those who popped 2,000 IU of Vitamin E took seven months longer to reach an advanced stage of the disease.

Rangit Kumar Chandra, a Vitamin E researcher at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, says more studies are needed to learn who can benefit most and at what dose. Vitamin E thins the blood, so high doses can cause bleeding in people who also take blood thinning drags, even aspirin. Individuals with serious conditions should consult their doctors. But most people over 65, Chandra says, can take up to 200 IU with no side effects and great benefits.

What's the main idea of the passage?

A.People will be in perfect health if they take Vitamin E every day.

B.Study showed that people who took Vitamin E regained their Flexibility.

C.Vitamin E may help prevent Alzheimer's.
