Many parents will say no to this demand. But experts say it might be a good idea to let your teens live with a friend or relative.
"It was the break I needed at the time," said Richard Lerner. He is talking about the time he spent living with his grandmother when he was 15.
"It allowed me to be a different person than I was with my parents." Lerner said. He now heads the Institute for Children, Youth and Families at Michigan State University.
Experts say teens living away from their families can test new ways of thinking and getting along with people. They may see new solutions (解答) to problems.
This is different from running away, the experts stress. Runaways are often fleeing serious problems.
Some teens who want some time away from family attend a structured summer program. Others live for a while with a relative or with the family of a friend.
If there is conflict (冲突) at home, having a teen live elsewhere can benefit other family members. It gives everyone space to develop better relationships.
Joseph Kett teaches history at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He says living at home until the late teen years has become the norm (准则) only in recent times.
"In the 17th century, children were often sent to live in other people's homes when they were about 10 or 11," he said.
Peter Sheras teaches education at the University of Virginia. He said parents should listen when a child wants to move out. They should try to find out why the child wants some time away.

Night of the Living Ants
When an ant dies，other ants move the dead insect out of the nest．This behavior. is interesting to scientists，who wonder how ants know for sure-and so soon-that another ant is dead．
Dong-Hwan Choe，a scientist at the University of California，found that Argentine ants have a chemical on the outside of their bodies that signals to other ants，“I’m dead-take me away．”
But there's a twist to Choe's discovery．Choe says that the living ants-not just the dead ones -have this death chemical．In other words，while an ant crawls around，perhaps in a picnic or home，it's telling other ants that it's dead．
What keeps ants from hauling away the living dead？Choe found that Argentine ants have two additional chemicals on their bodies，and these tell nearby ants something like，“Wait-I'm not dead yet．” So Choe's research turned up two sets of chemical signals in ants：one says，“I'm dead，”the other set says，“I'm not dead yet．”
Other scientists have tried to figure out how ants know when another ant is dead．If an ant is knocked unconscious，other ants leave it alone until it wakes up．That means ants know that unmoving ants can still be alive．
Choe suspects that when an Argentine ant dies．the chemical that says“Wait-I'm not dead yet” quickly goes away．Once that chemical is gone，only the one that says“I'm dead”is left．“It's because the dead ant no longer smells like a living ant that it gets carried to the graveyard(墓地)，not because its body releases new，unique chemicals after death，”said Choe．When other ants detect the“dead”chemical without the“not dead yet”chemical，they haul away the body．This was Choe's hypothesis(假设)．
To test his hypothesis，Choe and his team put different chemicals on Argentine ant pupae(蛹)． When the scientists used the“I'm dead”chemical，other ants quickly hauled the treated pupae away． When the scientists used the“Wait-I'm not dead yet”chemical，other ants left the treated pupae alone． Choe believes this behavior. shows that the“not dead yet”chemical overrides(优胜于)the“dead”chemical when picked up by adult ants．And that when an ant dies，the“not dead yet”chemical fades away． Other nearby ants then detect the remaining“dead”chemical and remove the body from the nest．

I believe in people, in sheer, unadulterated humanity. I believe in listening to what people have to say, in helping them to achieve the things which they want and the things which they need. Naturally, there are people who behave like beasts, who kill, who cheat, who lie and who destroy. The question is: How can these individual moments of human experience be filled with the richness of a philosophy which can sustain the individual in his own life？ Unless we give part of ourselves away, unless we can live with other people and understand them and help them, we are missing the most essential part of our own human lives.

Radiocarbon Dating
Nowadays scientists can answer many questions about the past through a technique called radiocarbon(放射性碳), or carbon-14, dating. One key to understanding how and why something happened is to discover when it happened.
Radiocarbon dating was developed in the late 1940s by physicist Willard F. Libby at the University of Chicago. An atom of ordinary carbon, called carbon-12, has six protons(质子) and six neutrons(中子) in its nucleus. Carbon-14, or C-14, is a radioactive, unstable form. of carbon that has two extra neutrons(原子核). It returns to a more stable form. of carbon through a process called decay(衰减). This process involves the loss of the extra neutrons and energy from the nucleus.
In Libby's radiocarbon dating technique, the weak radioactive emissions(放射) from this decay process are counted by instruments such as a radiation detector and counter. The decay rate is used to determine the proportion of C-14 atoms in the sample being dated.
Carbon-14 is produced in the Earth's atmosphere when nitrogen(氮)-14, or N-14, interacts with cosmic rays(宇宙射线). Scientists believe since the Earth was formed, the amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere has remained constant. Consequently, C-14 formation is thought to occur at a constant rate. Now ratio of C-14 to other carbon atoms in the atmosphere is known. Most scientists agree that this ratio is useful for dating items back to at least 50,000 years.
All life on Earth is made of organic molecules(分子) that contain carbon atoms coming from the atmosphere. So all living things have about the same ratio of C-14 atoms to other carbon atoms in their tissues(组织). Once an organism(有机体) dies it stops taking in carbon in any form, and the C-14 already present begins to decay. Over time the amount of C-14 in the material decreases, and the ratio of C-14 to other carbon atoms goes down. In terms of radiocarbon dating, the fewer C-14 atoms in a sample, the older that sample is.
Nowadays many scientists depend on radiocarbon for dating age-old objects.
