If you have a heart disease or condition, high-intensity exercise for longstretches could
actually increase your chance of a massive heart attack or stroke, recent studies found.

In the first of two studies(1)in Heart, German researchers spent a decadestudying the(2)and intensity of weekly exercise in 1,000 people in their 60swith coronary artery heart disease (冠心病), almost half of whom were(3)2-4times a week. Predictably, participants who(4)less than 2 times a week weredetermined to be at greater risk for a heart attack. However, counter-intuitively (直觉地 ) , participants who exercised more than the average were also twice aslikely to have a heart attack or stroke than the average.

A different study found that young men who engage in endurance exercisemore than five hours a week may(5)their risk of developing an irregular heartrhythm later in life.

Swedish researchers surveyed 44,000 men, ages 45-79, about theirexercise(6)at ages of 15,30,50 and over in 2013. Those who exercised(7)formore than five hours a week were 19% more likely to have developed an irregularheartbeat, which is a(8)factor in stroke risk.

Despite their findings, researchers(9)sounding the alarm full-force onintense exercise, citing the "benefits of exercise" while clarifying that "thestudies reviewed here, and future studies, will serve to maximize benefits obtainedby(10)exercise while preventing undesirable effects of intense exercise."

Population tends to grow at an exponential(指数的)rate. This means that they progressively double. As an example of this type of growth rate, take one penny and double every day for one month. After the first week, you would have only 64 cents, but after the fourth week you would have over a million dollars.

This helps explain why the population has come on "all of a sudden". It took from the beginning of human life to the year 1830 for the population of the earth to reach one billion. That repents(缓慢进行)a time span of at least two million years. Then it took from 1830 to 1930 for world population to reach 2 billion. The next billion was added by 1960, only thirty years, and in 1975 world population reached 4 billion, which is another billion people in only fifteen years.

World population is increasing at a rate of 9000 per hour, 220000 per day, and 80 million per year. This is not only due to higher birth rate, but to lower death rate as well. The number of births has not declined at the same rate as the number of deaths.

Some countries, such as Columbia, Thailand, Morocco, Costa Rica, and the Philippines, are doubling their population about every twenty-one years, with a growth rate of 3.3% a year or more. The United States is doubling its population about very eighty-seven years, with a rate of 0.8% per year. Every time a population doubles, the country involved needs twice as much of everything, including hospitals, schools, resources, food and medicines to care for its people. It is easy to see that this is very difficult to achieve for the more rapidly growing countries.

This passage chiefly discusses______.

A.the growth of world population

B.one type of the exponential rate

C.the population problem of more rapidly growing countries

D.the possible ways of dealing with the rapid population growth

Fifty volunteers were alphabetically divided into two equal groups. Group A is to partic
ipate in a 7-week exercise program and Group B is to avoid planned exercise of any sort during those 7 weeks. On the day before the exercise program began, all 50 men participated in a step-test. This consisted of stepping up and down on a 16-inch bench, at 30 steps a minute for 5 minutes. One minute after completion of the step-test, the pulse rate of each subject (被测试者 ) was taken and recorded. This served as the pretest for the experiment. For the next 7 weeks, subjects in Group A rode an Exercycle (机器脚踏车 ) for 15 minutes each day, while Group B remained doing no planned exercises. At the end of the 7 weeks, the step-test was again given to both groups of subjects, and their pulses taken. The post-exercise pulse rates of subjects in the experimental were found to have decreased an average of 30 heart beats per minutes, with the lowest decrease 28 and the highest decrease 46. The pulse rates of subjects in the control group remained the same or changed no more than 4 beats, with an average difference between the initial and final tests of zero.

A man once said how useless it was to put advertisements in the newspapers. "Last week," s
aid he, "my umbrella was stolen from a London Church. As it was a present, I spent twice its worth in advertising, but didn't get it back."

"How did you write your advertisement?" asked one of the listeners, a merchant.

"Here it is," said the man, taking out of his pocket a slip cut from a newspaper. The other man took it and read, "Lost from the City Church last Sunday evening, a black silk umbrella. The gentleman who finds it will receive ten shillings on leaving it at No. 10 Broad Street."

"Now," said the merchant, "I often advertise, and find that it pays me well. But the way in which an advertisement is expressed is of great importance. Let us try for your umbrella again, and if it fails, I'll buy you a new one." The merchant then took a slip of paper out of his pocket and wrote: "If the man who was seen to take an umbrella from the City Church last Sunday evening doesn't wish to get into trouble, he will return the umbrella to No. 10 Broad Street. He is well known." This appeared in the paper, and on the following morning, the man was astonished when he opened the front door. In the doorway lay at least twelve umbrellas of all sizes and colors that had been thrown in, and his own was among the number. Many of them had notes, fastened to them saying that they had been taken by mistake, and begging the loser not to say anything about the matter.

What is an advertisement?

A.A news item.

B.A public announcement in the press, on TV, etc.

C.One way to voice one's view.

D.Public opinions.

G、 Waste not, want not

The hugely popular blog the Skint Foodie chronicles how Tony balances his love of good food with living on benefits. After bills, Tony has 60 a week to spend, 40 of which goes on food, but 10 years ago he was earning 130,000 a I year working in corporate communications and eating at London&39;s betft restaurants&39;" at least twice a week. Then his marriage failed, his career burned out and his drinking became serious.

"The community mental health team saved my life. And I felt like that again, to a certain degree, when people responded to the blog so well. It gave me the validation and confidence that I&39;d lost. But it&39;s still a day-by-day thing." Now he&39;s living in a council flat and fielding offers from literary agents. He&39;s feeling positive, but he&39;ll carry on blogging - not about eating as cheaply as you can - "there are so many people in a much worse state, with barely any money to spend on food" - but eating well on a budget. Here&39;s his advice for economical foodies.41._____________________Impulsive spending isn&39;t an option, so plan your week&39;s menu in advance, making shopping lists for your ingredients in their exact quantities. I have an Excel template for a week of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stop laughing: it&39;s not just cost effective but helps you balance your diet. It&39;s also a good idea to shop daily instead of weekly, because, being-human, you&39;ll sometimes change your mind about what you fancy.

42____________________________________________________________

This is where supermarkets and thci; anonymity come in handy. With them, there&39;s not the same embarrassment as when buying one carrot in a little greengrocer. And if you plan properly, you&39;ll know that you only need, say, 350g of shin of beef and six rashers of bacon, not whatever weight is pre-packed in the supermarket chiller.

43____________________________________________________________

You may proudly claim to only have frozen peas in the freezer - that&39;s not good enough. Mine is filled with leftovers, bread, stock, meat and fish. Planning ahead should eliminate wastage, but if you have surplus vegetables you&39;ll do a vegetable soup, and all fruits threatening to "go off&39; will be cooked or juiced.44___________________________________

Everyone says this, but it really is a top tip for frugal eaters. Shop at butchers, delis and fish-sellers regularly, even for small things, and be super friendly. Soon you&39;ll feel comfortable asking if they&39;ve any knuckles of ham for soups and stews, or beef bones, chicken carcasses and fish heads for stock which, more often than not, Theyil let you have for free.

45_____________________________________________________________

You won&39;t be eating out a lot, but save your pennies and once every fewmonths treat yourself to a set lunch at a good restaurant - 1.75 a week for three months gives you 21 - more than" enough for a three-course lunch atMichelin-starred Arbutus. It&39;s 16.95 there - or 12.99 for a large pizza from Domino&39;s: I know which I&39;d rather eat.
