When people want to find out about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, ne
wspapers, or the Internet.However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife because of their highly developed senses.Drops in air pressure affect small mammals (哺乳动物) and insects in many ways.Try looking in or near the house.Mice are good weather indicators.People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that field mice come out of their holes and run around before a storm.

Deer leave the high ground and come down from the mountains before a storm.If you see this, you can be sure that there will be a storm within two days.When you see large numbers of sea crabs on a sandy beach, it is time to leave.A change in air pressure over the water warns the crabs that a storm is coming.To escape the stormy sea pounding the shore, they leave the water and seek shelter on land.

Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways.For example, some birds become easily annoyed and will fight over a piece of bread.Other birds sing just before a storm.It seems they know they won't get another chance for an hour or two.Birds also seek shelter before a storm.You will sometimes see birds resting in trees or staying closely together on a wire near a building.This is a good storm signal.

Seabirds sit out a storm on land.Anytime you see seagulls sitting on the ground in large groups, reluctant to fly, it is not a very good day to go sailing.It is unusual to see large groups of birds flying overhead in the summertime.Watch for other weather signs if you see this.You should also stay alert if you see migrating birds flying in the wrong direction.These birds may be flying ahead of a storm.And if you can't see a bird anywhere, look out! They may have flown to a different place because a violent storm is coming in their direction.

The job was done, and it was time for a last cigarette. Eddie began tapping the pockets of
his overalls, looking for the new packet of Marlboro he bought that morning. It was not there.

It was as he swung around to look in his toolbox for the cigarettes that Eddie saw the lump. Right in the middle of the brand new bright red carpet, there was a lump. A lump the size of a packet of cigarettes.

"I've done it again? said Eddie angrily. "I've left the cigarettes under the carpet?

He had done this once before, and taking up and refitting the carpet had taken him two hours. Eddie was determined that he was not going to spend another two hours in this house. He decided to get rid of the lump another way. It would mean wasting a good packet of cigarettes, nearly full, but anything was better than taking up the whole carpet and fitting it again .He turned to his toolbox for a large hammer.

Eddie didn't want to damage the carpet itself, so he took a block of wood and placed it on top of the lump. Then he began to beat the block of wood as hard as he could. He kept beating, hoping Mrs. Vanbrugh wouldn't hear the noise and come to see what he was doing. It would be difficult to explain why he was hammering the middle of her beautiful new carpet... The lump was beginning to flatten out.

After three or four minutes, the job was finally finished. Eddie picked up his tools, and began to walk out to his car. Mrs. Vanbrugh accompanied him. She seemed a little worried about something.

"Young man, while you were working today, you didn't by any chance see any sign of Armand, did you? Armand is my bird. I let him out of his cage, you see, this morning, and he's disappeared. He likes to walk around the house, and he usually just comes back to his cage after an hour or so and gets right in. Only today he didn't come back. He's never done such a thing before, it's most peculiar..."

"No, madam, I haven't seen him anywhere," said Eddie, as he reached to start the car.

And he saw his packet of Marlboro cigarettes on the panel, where he had left it at lunchtime....

And he remembered the lump in the carpet...

What did Eddie want to do when he had finished fitting the carpet?

A.To have a cigarette.

B.To hammer the carpet flat.

C.To put back his tools.

D.To start work in the dining room.

Most of us trade money for entertainment. Movies, concerts and shows are enjoyable but exp
ensive. (78) If you think that you can't have a good time without spending a lot of money, read on. A little resourcefulness and a few minutes of newspaper- scanning should give you some pleasant surprises.

People may be the most interesting show in a large city. Stroll through busy streets and see what everybody else is doing. (79) You will probably see people from all over the world; you will certainly see people of every age, size, and shape, and you' II get a free fashion show, too. Window - shopping is also a safe sport -- if the stores are closed.

Check the listings in your neighborhood paper. Local colleges or schools often welcome the public to hear an interesting speaker or a good debate. The film or concert series at the local public library probably won't cost you a penny. Be sure to check commercial advertisements too. A flea market can provide hours of pleasant browsing. Perhaps you can find a free cooking or crafts demonstration in a department store.

Plan ahead for some activities. It is always more pleasant not to have people in front of you in a museum or at a zoo. You may save some money, too, since these places often set aside one or two free admission days at slow times during the week. Pretend that you are a tourist from time to time, and get to know your city all over again including the indispensable sights that people travel miles to see. If you feel like taking an interesting walk, find a free walking tour, or plan one yourself. You will see your city in a new perspective once you know more about its history or its architectural treasures. With imagination and a spirit of adventure you can quite easily find good entertainment at no cost at all.

Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.There are many kinds of amusements you can enjoy with spending no money.

B.The film shown at the local public library is often free of charge.

C.Local colleges often hold meetings to debate the issues people are interested in.

D.You should be a tourist if you want to know more about the city you live in.

Losing a job or not being able to find one almost always brings unwelcome changes. If you'
ve lost a job, the first feeling is often one of shock. On top of the loss of income, many people find the whole routine of their life is shattered, their contact with other people reduced, their ambitions halted and their identity as a worker removed.

There may be good feelings too -- it's nice to be able to lie in bed in the morning, to spend more time with children, or to have more time to think -- a better job may be just around the comer. But, unless a better job does turn up, chances are the days start getting longer and the time becomes harder to fill. Many people pass through periods of difficulty in sleeping and eating. They feel irritable and depressed, often isolated and lonely.

Despite all these problems, unemployment can be a chance for a fresh start. You can discover that it provides an opportunity to sort out or rethink what you want from life and how best you can get it. You can use the time to plan how to find a new job, learn a new skill, develop your hobbies, see if you can run your own business, do some voluntary work in your community or meet new people. It's up to you.

阅读理解:阅读下面的短文,根据文章内容进行判断,正确写“T”错误写“F”。

Feedback from your customers is very important. The more information you have from them, the more competitive you will be in your field. The following techniques will help you know what the customers think of your business.

1. Ask your customers directly and cater to their wishes. This is the simplest way to find out what people want from your service or product. When hotel customers are asked what they want for their breakfast and then the hotel staff are asked what they think the customer wants, the answers are quite different.

2. Be a customer yourself and find out what your customers experience when they use your service. This is one of the most obvious but underused ways for getting feedback. For example, you can act as one of the customers in a wheelchair, and see how you’re treated.

3. Use a focus group. Focus groups are representatives of customers whose job is to provide you with information on their needs and preferences.

4. Use questionnaires and surveys. This is one of the most well-established feedback techniques. When well-conducted, they usually work well.

5. Encourage your front-line staff to build strong relationships with customers. Your front-line staff are the most resourceful and reliable, as well as the least costly, of your customer feedback sources. Their communication with the customers will become important information for improving customer care.

You may deliver the best service in the world. But if it is not what people want, you’re wasting your time. Implement one, two, three or all of the above techniques, and your service and product will improve overnight.

1. Hotel customers and hotel staff think the same about breakfast.{T、F}

2. A good or bad experience of a customer in a wheelchair in your shop shows whether your service is good or not.{T、F}

3. It’s not necessary to know about the customers’ needs and preferences. {T、F}

4. Questionnaires are useful in getting feedback from customers.{T、F}

5. Front-line staff have nothing to do with improving customer service.{T、F}
