ENGLISH, THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE
English is spoken as a native language by around 377 million people, and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language. English has an official or a special status in 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion.
The domination of the English language globally is a sure thing. English is the language of international communications, business, tourism, education, science, computer technology, media and the Internet.
British colonialism in the 19th century and American capitalism and technological progress in the 20th century were undoubtedly the main causes for the spread of English throughout the world. From the fifteenth century, the British began to sail all over the world and became explorers, colonists and imperialists. They took the English language to many places. For the last hundred years, the USA has played a leading role in most parts of the world. The Hollywood film industry also attracted many foreign artists in quest of fame and fortune and the number of American films produced every year soon flooded the market.
However, the future of English as a global language will depend very largely on the political, economic, demographic and cultural trends in the world.

Therefore there are critical【70】times for language development.

M: Well, when learning a foreign language, I would surround myself in the language, the target language, that I wanted to learn.
W: Surround oneself in the language? I think it is difficult to do that. Can you explain how you do it?
M: Uh, for example, I would watch a movie in that language, uh, which would help me keep motivated to learn vocabulary and phrases.
W: That sounds interesting.
M: Yeah, you'll have a lot of fun by doing so.
W: I see. A little hit of practice every day is very important to language learning.
M: Yes. Regular practice is also better than practicing a lot in one day. Learning a language well needs patience and perseverance.
W: Then what else did you do to learn a foreign language?
M: Well, I would keep a situational notebook.
W: What is that used for?
M: Ur, for example, in a restaurant, you use a certain phrase over and over again, and so if you can remember just one particular phrase in each setting, then you can immediately speak that language and have more confidence and you get more out of learning the language, I think.
W: Really? I'll try that. Thank you for your advice.
M: You're welcome.

The classroom scene at McCormick is unusual, but it may soon be a common phenomenon in American schools, where Chinese is rapidly becoming the hot new language. Government officials have long wanted more focus on useful languages like Chinese, and pressure from them -- as well as from business leaders, politicians, and parents -- has produced a quick growth in the number of programs.
Chicago city officials make their best effort to include Chinese in their public schools. Their program has grown to include 3,000 students in 20 schools, with more schools on a waiting list. Programs have also spread to places like Los Angeles, New York City, and North Carolina. Supporters see knowledge of the Chinese language and culture as an advantagein a global economy where China is growing in importance. “This is an interesting way to begin to engage with the world's next superpower,” says Michael Levine, director of education at the Asia Society, which has started five new public high schools that offer Chinese. “Globalization has already changed the arrangements in terms of how children today are going to think about their careers, The question is when, not whether, the schools are going to adjust.”

And the No. one difficulty, everyone agrees, is having enough teachers. Finding teacher “is the challenge,” says Scott McGinnis, an academic adviser for a language institute and a Chinese teacher for 15 years at the college level. “Materials are easy comparison. Or getting schools funded.”
