I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighborhood where I grew up; and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (in many countries, eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons). Composers today use a wider variety of sounds than ever before, including many
that were once considered undesirable noises. Composer Edgard Varese (1883-1965)
called thus the "liberation of sound...the right to make music with any and all sounds."
Electronic music, for example―made with the aid of computers, synthesizers, and
