Very high waves are destructive when they strike the land. Fortunately, this seldom happen
ed. One reason is that out at sea, waves moving in one direction almost always run into waves moving in a different direction. The two sets of waves tend to cancel each other out. Another reason is that water is shallower near the shore. As a wave gets closer to land, the shallow bottom helps reduce its strength.

But the power of waves striking the shore can still be very great. During a winter gale(大风), waves sometimes strike the shore with the force of 6,000 pounds for each square foot. That means a wave, 25 feet high and 500 feet along its face, may strike the shore with a force of 75 million pounds.

Yet the waves, no matter how big or how violent, affect only the surface of the sea. During the most violent storms, the water a hundred fathoms(600 feet) beneath the surface is just as calm as on a day without a breath of wind.

According to the passage, destruction caused by high waves occurs ______.

A.regularly

B.rarely

C.frequently

D.suddenly

Anyone who has ridden on a railroad train knows how rapidly another train【36】by when it is
traveling in the【37】direction and conversely how it may look almost【38】when it is moving in the same direction.【39】a train at a station starts to move forward【40】gently that passengers feels no backward movement【41】.Then if they happened to【42】the window and see another train slide past on the next track, they have no way of knowing【43】train is in motion and which is at rest;【44】can they tell how fast either one is moving or in which direction The only way they can judge their【45】is by looking out the other side of the car for some fixed body of reference【46】the station platform. or a single fight. Newton was【47】these tricks of motion, only he thought in terms of ships. He knew that on a calm day at sea a sailor can shave himself or drink soup as【48】as when his ship is lying motionless in harbor. The water in his basin, the soup in his bowl, will remain【49】whether the ship is making five knots, 15 knots or 25 knots. So【50】he looks hard at the sea it will be【51】for him to know how fast his ship is moving or indeed if it is moving at all. Of course, if the sea should get rough or the ship changes course suddenly,【52】he will sense his state of motion. But even supposing that we have the idealized conditions of a glass calm sea and a silent ship, nothing that happens below decks -- no amount of observation or mechanical experiment performed inside the ship --will reveal its velocity through the sea. The physical【53】based on these facts was formulated by Newton in 1687."The motions of bodies included in a given space , he wrote, "are the same【54】themselves, whether that space is at rest or moves uniformly【55】in a straight line."

Bond had walked for only a few minutes when it suddenly occurred to him that he was being
followed. There was no evidence for it except a slight tingling(隐隐作痛) of the scalp(头皮) and an extra awareness of the people near him, but he had faith in his sixth sense and he at once stopped in front of the shop window he was passing and looked casually back along 46th Street. Nothing but a lot of miscellaneous people moving slowly on the sidewalks, mostly on the same side as himself, the side that was sheltered from the sun. There was no sudden movement into a doorway, nobody casually wiping his face with a handkerchief to avoid recognition, nobody bending down to tie a shoelace.

Bond examined the Swiss watches in his shop window and then turned and sauntered on. After a few yards he stopped again. Still nothing. He went on and turned fight into the Avenue of the Americans, stopping in the first doorway, the entrance to a women's underwear store where a man in a tan suit with his back to him was examining the black lace pants on a particularly realistic dummy(模型). Bond turned and leant against a pillar and gazed lazily but watchfully out into the street.

And then something gripped his pistol arm and a voice snarled:" All right, Limey. Take it easy unless you want lead for lunch", and he felt something press into his back just above the kidney.

What was there familiar about that voice? The law? The gun? Bond glanced down to see what was holding his right ann. It was a steel hook. Well, if the man had only one arm! Like lightening he turned around, bending sideways and bringing his left fist round in a flailing blow, low down.

There was a smack as his fist was caught in the other man's left hand, and at the same time as the contact telegraphed to Bond's mind that there could have been no gun, there came the well-remembered laugh and the lazy voice saying:" No good, James. The angles have got you."

Bond straightened himself slowly and for a moment he could only gaze into the grinning hawk-life face of Felix Leiterwith blank disbelief, his built-up tension slowly relaxing.

"So you were doing a front tail, you lousy bastard, "he finally said.

Bond realized that he was being followed by means of ______. ()

A.his common sense

B.his sense of humour

C.his sight

D.his sixth sense

Most of us,when we reached our teens, started looking forward to the day when we would occu
py places of our own,far from the confines of our families. We saw this moving away as a chance to strike out on our own,to grow,to spread out wings and experience freedom. At the same time,we regarded this independence as temporary-the thing to do until we found the perfect mate and married. Over the years, many millions of people have made this passage from one family to another, with just a brief, often nervous interval of independence in between. But recently, more and more people have begun to challenge the concept that living together is better than living alone. Being single is now accepted as an alternative lifestyle-one that is natural, rewarding, and complete. In fact, being single has become almost fashionable.
