Even plants can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. B

ut unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away——straight up. A decade ago, adapting the infrared (红外线) scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂) spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don't have pest (害虫) problems.

Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they be- came visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color, code map showing where plants were running "fevers". Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.

The had news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States", says George Oerther of Texas A&M. Ray Jackson, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.

Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are ______. ()

A.sprayed with pesticides

B.in pour physical condition

C.facing an infrared scanner

D.exposed to excessive sun rays

根据下列短文,回答下列各题。 Climate.more than any other single factor, determines the dist
ribution of life on earth.Cli-matic boundaries establish the limits which organisms can survive.Plants, even more than ani-mals.must be well adapted to climate in order to survive. They cannot move about or take shel-ter but must be equipped to endure whatever weather conditions are likely to Occur. In the harsh conditions of the tundra, for example, low growing mosses, lichens, and a few flowering plants allhug the ground for shelter from icy winds. Animals, despite their ability to move about and find shelter, are just as much influenced by climate as plants are.Creatures such as the camel and the penguin are so highly specializedthat they have an extremely limited distribution。Others, such as bears are flexible"enough to a.dapt to a broad range of climates.Oceandwelling organisms are just as sensitive to climaticchanges--in this case temperature and salinity--as land animals.Reef corals can survive onlyin clear warm seawater.Certain foraminifers are so sensitive to changes in their environmentthat their presence can be taken as an index of sea temperature.Human beings are among theleast specialized of all animals and can live almost anywhere.Their clothes and their homes actas a sort of“miniature climate”that Can be taken with them everywhere. According to the passage, plants on the tundra grow in the ground_________.

A.to avoid being eaten by arctic animals

B.because fertilizer is not readily available

C.to minimize exposure to the cold

D.because unfrozen water supplies are very scarce

Even the newest gardener realizes that plants die without water; what is not so well known
is that plants die equally decisively, though not so quickly, if they are overwatered. Beginners usually decide to play it safe and keep their potted plants thoroughly wet. In consequence, death by drowning is one of the commonest disasters to befall the plants of a new horticulturist. Plants wither away if they don't get enough water, and this draws attention to their problem. A plant that has been slightly underwatered so that it droops strikes terror into the heart of its new owner. But it will, in fact, recover completely as long as rescue comes in time and the process is not repeated too often. Overwatered plants, unfortunately, do not give any such obvious signal; slowly they cease to thrive and the first visible indication of serious trouble is a yellowing of the lower leaves. Unless the overwatered pot soil is given a considerable period without water, during which time the plant will continue to look wretched, it will suddenly collapse in exactly the same way as the underwatered plant but with no chance of being revived(复活)because the roots have rotted away.

From the text we can infer a horticulturist is person engaged in ______.

A.growing plants

B.raising birds

C.cutting plants

D.studying the death cause of plants

阅读理解:阅读下面短文,选择合适的内容将短文补充完整。

A. to cook or heat your home

B. checked regularly

C. to reduce air pollution

D. Use less electricity

E. Raising any sort of livestock

Man-made air pollution mainly comes from two sourcesA、mobile ones and stationary ones. Mobile sources are cars, planes, boats, etc. Stationary sources include large factories, power plants and every household, which burns natural gas or wood. The most important ways _____ are to drive less, use less electricity and natural gas, and eat vegetarian.

_THESE IDEAS ARE EASY TO FOLLOW:_

1. Get your car _____ to make sure everything works properly. Whenever possible, walk, cycle, carpool, or use public transportation. Buy fuel-efficient vehicles. Drive at 60 mph or less to improve gas mileage.

2. Burn less natural gas _____ . Instead, use a solar cooker or heater and wear extra layers.

3. Become a vegetarian or a vegan. _____ requires more land and emits more carbon dioxide than simply growing crops directly for human food.

4. _____. Coal power plants produce most of the world’s electricity, and they also produce more carbon dioxide than any other source. Coal plants also release many other pollutants. Unplug televisions, cell phone chargers, and other appliances while not in use. Most devices continue to use small amounts of power even when they’re turned off. Avoid using air conditioning, and don’t leave the fridge open any longer than necessary. Only run the clothes washer or dish washer when full. Rather than using a dryer, hang clothes on a line to dry in the sun.

The idea of a fish being able to generate electricity strong enough to light lamp bulbs--o
r even to run a small electric motor--is almost unbelievable, but several kinds of fish are able to do this. Even more strangely, this curious power has been acquired in different ways by fish belonging to very different families.

Perhaps the best known are the electric rays, or torpedoes (电鱼), of which several kinds live in warm seas. They posses on each side of the head, behind the eyes, a large organ consisting of a number of hexagon- al shaped cells rather like a honeycomb. The cells are filled with a jelly-like substance, and contain a series of flat electric plates. One side, the negative side, of each plate, is supplied with very fine nerves, connected with a main nerve coming from a special part of the brain. Current passes from the upper, positive side of the organ downwards to the negative, lower side. Generally it is necessary to touch the fish in two places, completing the circuit, in order to receive a shock.

The strength of this shock depends on the size of the fish, but newly born ones only about 5 centimeters across can be made to light the bulb of a pocket flashlight for a few moments, while a fully grown torpedo gives a shock capable of knocking a man down, and, if suitable wires are connected, will operate a small electric motor for several minutes.

Another famous example is the electric eel. This fish gives an even more powerful shock. The system is different from that of the torpedo in that the electric plates run longitudinally (纵向) and are supplied with nerves from the spinal(脊骨)cord. Consequently, the current passes along the fish from head to tail. The electric organs of these fish are really altered muscles and like all muscles are apt (likely) to tire, so they are not able to produce electricity for very long.

The power of producing electricity may serve these fish both for defence and attack.

It can be seen from the passage that ______. ()

A.the capacity to generate electricity is the distinctive characteristic of the fish

B.the current travels in an upward direction from the positive side to negative side in torpedo's electric cells

C.some fish can produce enough electricity to drive a number of electric motors

D.the torpedo's electric cells have a shape with six sides
