What has the telephone done to us, or for us, in the hundred years of its existence? A few
effects suggest themselves at once. It has saved lives by getting rapid word of illness, injury, or fire from remote places. By joining with the elevator to make possible the multi-story residence or office building, it has made possible -- for better or worse -- the modern city. By bringing about a great leap in the speed and space with which information moves from place to place, it has greatly accelerated the rate of scientific and technological changes and growth in industry. Beyond doubt it has seriously weakened if not killed the ancient art of letter writing. It has made living alone possible for person with normal social impulses; by doing so it has played a role in one of the greatest social changes of this century, the breaking up of the multi-generational household. It has made the war chillingly more efficient than formerly. Perhaps though not provable (可证实), it has prevented wars that might have arisen out of international misunderstanding caused by written communication. Or perhaps--again not provable--by magnifying and extending irrational personal conflicts based on voice contact it impartially disseminates (传播) the useful knowledge of scientists and the nonsense of the ignorant, the affection of the affectionate and the malice (恶意) of the malicious.

What is the main idea of this passage?

A.The telephone has helped to save people from illness and fire.

B.The telephone has helped to prevent wars and conflicts.

C.The telephone has made the modern city neither better nor worse.

D.The telephone has had positive as well as negative effects on us.

Everybody may have seen the film "Death on the Nile (尼罗河) ," but nobody can imagine that the writer of the story, Agatha Christie, saved a baby in a most unusual way.

In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Deleville. Doctors there were unable to find out the cause of her illness, so she was sent to a famous hospital in London, where there were many excellent doctors. The baby was so seriously iii that a team of doctors hurried to examine her without any delay. The doctors, too, were puzzled by the baby's illness, and they also became discouraged. Just then a nurse asked to speak to them.

"I think the baby is suffering from thallium (铊) poisoning," said the nurse~ "A few days ago, I read a story 'A Pale Horse' written by Agatha Christie. Someone uses thallium poison, and all the symptoms (症状) are written in the book. They are exactly the same as the baby's."

"You're very good at observing things, "said a doctor, "and you may be right. We'll carry out some tests and find out whether the cause is thallium poisoning or not."

The tests proved that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium. Once they knew that cause, the doctors were able to give her correct treatment. The baby soon got well and was sent back to Deleville. A week later it was reported that the poison might have come from an insecticide (杀虫剂) used in Deleville.

The baby was sent to a hospital in London because ______.

A.her parents were living in London then

B.the hospitals in Deleville were full at that time

C.she was the daughter of a famous doctor in London

D.doctors in Deleville were not sure about the cause of her illness

The plight of the aged has come to be regarded as a major social problem in the United Sta
tes. In a sense, the elderly (conventionally, those aged sixty-five and over) are a "newly-discovered" minority group. Like other minority groups, the old are subjected to job discrimination; they suffer nigh rates of poverty; they face prejudice founded on inaccurate stereotypes; they are excluded from the mainstream of American life on the basis of supposed group characteristics; and they are offered few meaningful roles in their society. In addition, the aged may face such problems as nigh rates of victimization by criminals, a heavy, burden of chronic illness and medical expenses, and psychological problems that result from their loss of independence and their sense of being unwanted. In America, childhood is romanticized, youth is idolized, middle age does the work, wields the power and pays the bills, and old age gets little or nothing for what it has already done. For many elderly Americans old age is a tragedy, a period of quiet despair, deprivation, desolation and muted rage. The tragedy of old age is not that each of us must grow old and die but that the process of doing so has been made unnecessarily painful, humiliating and isolating through insensitivity, ignorance, and poverty.
