A youngster"s social development has a profound effect on his academic progress.Kids who have trouble getting along with their classmates can end up behind academically as well and have a higher chance of dropping out(退学).In the early grades especially, experts say, youngsters should be encouraged to work in groups rather than individually so that teachers can spot children who may be having problems making friends.“When children work on a pro-ject,”says Lillian Kate,an educational professor at the University of Illinois,“they learn to work together,to disagree,to think to take turns and lighten tensions. These skims can’t be learned through lecture. We all know people who have wonderful technical skills but don’t have any social skills.Relationships should be the first R.”At a certain age, children are also learning to judge themselves in relation to others. For most children, school marks the first time that their goals are not set by an internal clock but by the outside world.Just as the l-year-old struggling to walk the 6-year-old is struggling to meet adult expectations.“Young kids don’t know how to distinguish early-childhood education for the state of New Jersey,if they try hard to do something and fail, they may conclude that they will never be able to accomplish a particular task. The effects is serious,”says Hills,“a child who has had his confidence really damaged needs a rescue operation.”

Are you aware that you actually possess six senses? The sixth is a muscular sense responsi
ble for directing your muscles intelligently to the extent necessary for each action you perform. For example, when you reach for an object, the sensory nerves linking the muscles to the brain stop your hand at the correct spot. This automatic perception of the position of your muscles in relation to the object is your muscular sense in action.

Muscles are stringly bundles of fibers varying from one five - thousand of an inch to about three inches. They have three unique characteristics, they can become shorter and thicker; they can stretch; and they can retract to their original positions. Under a high -powered microscope, muscle tissue is seen as long, slender cells with a grainy texture like wood.

More than half of a person' s body is composed of muscle fibers, most of which are involuntary, in other words, work without conscious direction. The voluntary muscles, those that we move consciously to perform. particular actions, number more than five hundred. Women have only 60 to 70 percent as much muscle as men for their body mass. That is why an average woman can' t lift as much, throw as far, or hit as hard as an average man.

According to the selection, the muscular sense is responsible for ______ .

A.the efficiency of our muscles

B.the normal breathing function

C.directing our muscles intelligently

D.the work of only our involuntary muscles

When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see
perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.

People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes.' Everything else is not so clear. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become near sighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant (远处的) things clearly.

People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them."

Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of the other eye. You will find the object's relation to the background (背景) and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.

We should take good care of our eyes ______.

A.only when we cannot see perfectly

B.only when we can see well

C.even if we can see well

D.only when we realize how important our eyes are
