根据以下内容回答题:

“CuIture shock”occurS as result of total immersion in a new culture. It happens to“peo-Dle who haye been suddenly transplanted abroad.”Newcomers may be anxious because they do not speak the language, know the customs,or understand people’s behavior. in daily life. The visitor finds that“yes may not always mean“yes”,that friendliness does not necessarily mean friendship,or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended as jokes. The for-eigner may be unsure as to when to shake hands, when to start conversations,or how to approach a stmnger. The notion of“culture shock”helps explain feelings of bewilderment(困惑)and disorientation.Language problems do not account for all the frustrations(挫败)that people feel. When one is deprived of everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register for university classes,Ot knowing how to make friends, difficulties in coping with the new society may arise. “…when an individual enters a strange cuhure,he or she is like fish out of water.”New-comers feel at times that they do not belong to and feel alienated from the native members of thecuhure. When this happens visitors may want t0·reject everything about the new environment and may glorify and exaggerate(夸大)the positive aspects of their own culture.Conversely visitors may scorn their native country by rejecting its values and instead choosing to identify with(if only temporarily)the value of the new country. This may occur as an attempt to over—identify with the new culture in order to be accepted by the people in it.

The expression“he or she is like fish out of water”suggests__________ .

A.people away from their cultures can hardly survive in a new culture

B.a fish can not survive without water

C.people away from their culture experience mental isolation

D.people away from their culture has difficulties in new environment

When Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer in rural Illinois, he and a certain judge in town once g
ot to bantering with one another about horse trading. The upshot of the discussion was that they agreed that the next morning, at nine o'clock, they would meet in front of the general store and make a trade. Each would bring a horse, unseen by anyone up to that hour. If either backed out of the deal, he would forfeit $ 25. The money from each man was held by the local banker.

The next morning, at the appointed hour, the Judge, came up the dirt road, leading the sorriest looking specimen of a horse ever seen in those parts of Illinois. The large crowd viewing the spectacle burst out laughing, already knowing that Abe Lincoln was bound to get the worst of the deal. A poorer horse just couldn't exist anywhere and still be walking.

In a few minutes, however, Mr. Lincoln was seen approaching the general store carrying something quite large and bulky on his shoulders. As he drew nearer, the crowd saw what it was, and great shouts and laughter broke out. The shouts and laughter soon broke into a thunderous roar when Mr. Lincoln, looking carefully and seriously over the Judge's animal, set down his sawhorse(锯木架), and exclaimed, "Well, Judge, this is the first time I ever got the worst of it in a horse trade."

This passage concerns ______.

A.the life of Abe Lincoln

B.a horse trade made by Abe Lincoln

C.a gambling in Illinois

D.Abe Lincoln's philosophy

Anyone who has ridden on a railroad train knows how rapidly another train【36】by when it is
traveling in the【37】direction and conversely how it may look almost【38】when it is moving in the same direction.【39】a train at a station starts to move forward【40】gently that passengers feels no backward movement【41】.Then if they happened to【42】the window and see another train slide past on the next track, they have no way of knowing【43】train is in motion and which is at rest;【44】can they tell how fast either one is moving or in which direction The only way they can judge their【45】is by looking out the other side of the car for some fixed body of reference【46】the station platform. or a single fight. Newton was【47】these tricks of motion, only he thought in terms of ships. He knew that on a calm day at sea a sailor can shave himself or drink soup as【48】as when his ship is lying motionless in harbor. The water in his basin, the soup in his bowl, will remain【49】whether the ship is making five knots, 15 knots or 25 knots. So【50】he looks hard at the sea it will be【51】for him to know how fast his ship is moving or indeed if it is moving at all. Of course, if the sea should get rough or the ship changes course suddenly,【52】he will sense his state of motion. But even supposing that we have the idealized conditions of a glass calm sea and a silent ship, nothing that happens below decks -- no amount of observation or mechanical experiment performed inside the ship --will reveal its velocity through the sea. The physical【53】based on these facts was formulated by Newton in 1687."The motions of bodies included in a given space , he wrote, "are the same【54】themselves, whether that space is at rest or moves uniformly【55】in a straight line."

A thief entered the bedroom of the 30th president of the United States, who met him and he
lped him free.

The event happened in the early morning in one of the first days when Calvin Coolidge came into power. He and his family were living in the same third-floor suite at the Willard Hotel in Washington that they had moved in several years before. The former President's wife was still living in the White House.

Coolidge awoke to see a stranger go through his clothes, remove a wallet and a watch chain.

Coolidge spoke, "I wish you won't take that."

The thief, gaining his voice, said, "Why?"

"I don't mean the watch and chain, only the charm. Take it near the window and read what is on its back," the President said.

The thief read," Presented to Calvin Coolidge."

"Are you President Coolidge?" he asked.

The President answered "Yes, and the House of Representatives gave me that watch charm. I'm fond of it. It would do you no good. You want money. Let's talk this over."

Holding up the wallet, the young man said in a low voice, "I'll take this and leave everything else."

Coolidge, knowing there was $80 in it, persuaded the young man to sit down and talk. He told the President he and his college roommate had overspent during their holiday and did not have enough money to pay their hotel bill.

Coolidge added up the roommate and two rail tickets back to the college. Then he counted out $32 and said it was a loan.

He then told the young man "There is a guard in the corridor." The young man nodded and left through the same window as he had entered.

What caused the thief to meet the President?

A.He knew the President had lots of money.

B.He knew the President lived in the suite.

C.He wanted to be a rich businessman.

D.He wanted to steal some money.
