Culture shock is caused by the anxiety that results from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. Learning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I ’d ask whether anyone

The English language we know today is about six hundred years old. For half that time, Eng
lish was just the language of the people living in England. The modern English language grew by about the year 1 400. Now English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is one of the working languages at international meetings, business, science and other fields.

The differences between American English and British English are not very great. Written English is more or less the same in both Britain and America, though there are some spelling differences. Many people think a telephone is essential. But I think it is a pest and a time waster. Ve
ry often you find it impossible to escape from some idle or inquisitive chatter-box, or from somebody who wants something for nothing. I admit that in different circumstances--if I were a tycoon(实业界巨头) , for instance, or bed-ridden I might find a telephone essential. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car essential. Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular aptitude: one is mechanical invention, the other is literature. When you go to university to study for a degree, you have decided to study professionally, rather than as an amateur; so being a student is now your profession for at least the next four years.

This involves a change of attitude in many ways. Although the process has been going on since you went to middle school, the biggest change is going to take place. Now, instead of taking several subjects, you have chosen one major subject because you find it interesting and worth exploring further. The choice was yours. You are there to study (an active process) rather than to be taught (passive).
