根据下列短文,回答下列各题。 Climate.more than any other single factor, determines the dist
ribution of life on earth.Cli-matic boundaries establish the limits which organisms can survive.Plants, even more than ani-mals.must be well adapted to climate in order to survive. They cannot move about or take shel-ter but must be equipped to endure whatever weather conditions are likely to Occur. In the harsh conditions of the tundra, for example, low growing mosses, lichens, and a few flowering plants allhug the ground for shelter from icy winds. Animals, despite their ability to move about and find shelter, are just as much influenced by climate as plants are.Creatures such as the camel and the penguin are so highly specializedthat they have an extremely limited distribution。Others, such as bears are flexible"enough to a.dapt to a broad range of climates.Oceandwelling organisms are just as sensitive to climaticchanges--in this case temperature and salinity--as land animals.Reef corals can survive onlyin clear warm seawater.Certain foraminifers are so sensitive to changes in their environmentthat their presence can be taken as an index of sea temperature.Human beings are among theleast specialized of all animals and can live almost anywhere.Their clothes and their homes actas a sort of“miniature climate”that Can be taken with them everywhere. According to the passage, plants on the tundra grow in the ground_________.

A.to avoid being eaten by arctic animals

B.because fertilizer is not readily available

C.to minimize exposure to the cold

D.because unfrozen water supplies are very scarce

The Eskimo dog commanded by the Eskimo, is guided solely by voice and whip, the latter be
ing from twelve to eighteen feet long. In the hands of the experienced dog runner, the whip becomes a marvelous instrument of precision. He can literally snap the tip of it on a dime(在极小的地方). The Eskimo, unspoiled by white man's influence, is perhaps one of the most trusting and primitive of all Indians but seems to be indifferent to the welfare of his animals. In this he' s simply a product of his environment where food is hard to get, hunger is frequent, and the climate for nine months of the year is marked by bitter cold and a long stretch of darkness. In consequence, his dogs have to earn their keep and earn it the hard way. Rarely is dog taken into the shelter of the family' s home. His sleeping place, no matter how severe the weather, is a burrow(洞穴) in the snow. Rarely is the Eskimo dog permitted to wander.

When his master is moved to travel, the dog has to be on hand to help pull whatever load is put on the sledge(雪撬), and often such loads are very heavy. The Eskimo dog in his region is tough, savage, quarrelsome animal with a hairtrigger(一触即发的) temper. On his home ground he re quires stern handling--and he gets it.

An Eskimo uses his whip ______.

A.to kill animals when food is scarce

B.to earn his keep

C.with amazing accuracy

D.for making his dogs tough

To get a chocolate out of a box demands a considerable amount of unpacking: the box has to
be taken out of its paper bag; the plastic wrapper has to be torn off, the lid opened and the packing paper inside removed; the chocolate itself then has to be unwrapped from its own piece of paper. Similarly a pot of face cream comes surrounded by layers of paper, waged inside a cardboard box, and the whole thing wrapped tightly in plastic.

It is not only luxuries which are wrapped in this way, With so many goods now produced centrally and sold in supermarkets it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy anything from nails to potatoes that is not already done up in plastic or paper.

The wrapper itself is of no interest to the shopper, who usually throws it away immediately. Useless wrapping accounts for much o the 31 pounds in weight of rubbish put out by the average London household each week. So why is it done? Some of it, like the wrapping on meat, is necessary, but most of the rest is simply competitive selling. This is stupid. Packaging is using up scarce energy and raw materials and ruining all the time. One big firm reports that its glass, cans and paper have all gone up by 30 per cent in the last couple of months, while plastic has increased by 50 percent and all these prices are still rising. This seems as yet to have had surprisingly little effect on the packaging practice of manufacturers.

Little research is being carried out on the costs in energy and materials of other possible types of packaging. Just how practical is it, for instance, for local authorities to save waste paper and re-manufacture it as egg-boxes? Would it be cheaper to plant another forest to produce new paper?

One reason for the unorganized behavior. of everyone concerned is probably the varied nature of the packaging industry. So many people, with so many different interests of their own, are affected that it is extremely hard to reach any agreement on what should be done. Also, packagers say that preserving forests and preventing waste is not their concerns.

The shopper gets rid of the wrapper immediately because______.

A.he is careless.

B.it adds to the weight.

C.it is difficult for him to handle.

D.it has no importance for him.

根据以下内容回答题:

No one knows for sure why birds migrate. One theory of migration says that ancient birds of the northern part of the earth were forced southward during the Ice Age,when ice covered large parts of Europe,Asia and North America. As the ice melted, the birds came back to their homelands, spent the summer, and then went south again in winter.Gradually, these comings and goings became habits, and birds now migrate though much of the ice has gone. Another theory proposes that the ancient home of all modern birds was the tropic areas. There lived so well that the region became overcrowded. Many species had to move northward.During the summer, these birds found plenty of room and food.In winter, however, food be-came scarce and they had to return to the south. A newer theory is that increasing daylight stimulates certain glands(腺)in the bird’s body and prepares it for migration. One scientist is able to make birds migrate in midwinter by expo-sing them for two months to artificial daylight.Recoveries of marked birds indicate that they fly north as soon as they are set free. The conclusion is that the urge to migrate is determined by changes in the bird’s body which take place under seasonal changes in the length of daylight. This theory would account for the fact that not all birds migrate at the same time. Each sDecies seems to have its own schedule. The theory would also account for the regular time and rou‘tes of migration.Birds arrive at a given place year after year.Unfavorable weather delays them only a few days.Total hours of daylight, rather than weather, start them on the way. How birds find their way to the same place year after year and why they follow their own Darticular route are still mysteries. They evidently do not follow known landmarks, for many young birds migrate alone without the help of experienced adults.

We can conclude from the first paragraph that__________ .

A.during the Ice Age,the whole Europe was covered with ice

B.the south used to be the homelands of all birds

C.scientists can confidently explain why birds migrate now

D.migration of birds can be explained by the change of ice on earth
