This past fall semester, at Duke University, there were two students who were taking Organ
ic Chemistry. They did pretty well on all of the tests and the midterms and labs, etc., such that going into the final they had a solid “A” . There two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals’ week, even though the Chemistry final was on Monday, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and have a party with some friends up there. So they did this and had a great time. However, with the aftereffects of alcohol and everything, they overslept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning.

Rather than taking the final then, what they did was to find Professor Aldric after the final and explain to him why they missed the final. They told him that they went up to UVA for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire (爆胎)on the way back and didn’t have a spare and couldn’t get help for a long time and so were late getting back to campus.

Aldric thought this over and then agreed that they could make up the final on the following day. The two guys were overjoyed and relieved. So, they studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Aldric had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin.

They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about free radical formation and was worth 5 points. “Cool," they thought, “this is going to be easy. " They did that problem and then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on the next page. It said: (95 points) Which tire was flat?

The two students decided to visit their friends at the weekend beacause_______

A.they didn’t want to take the exam

B.they were invited by their friends

C.they were not worried about the exam at all

D.they forget the arrangement of the final exam

They didn’t return as planned because_______.A.they got lost on their way back

B.they slept beyond the time to come back

C.their car broke down on their way back

D.they couldn’t get help when they were in difficulty

B.He gave them different exam papers.

C.He asked a very surprising question.

D.He gave them very limited time to finish the paper.

When they took the first glance at the exam booklet, they thought_______.A.it was easy

B.it was too much

C.it was too difficiult

D.it was reasonable

It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A.the students didn’t like Professor Aldric

B.the two students had difficulties in their studies

C.Professor Aldric was very clever and humorous

D.the two students would surely pass the make-up exam

During the Progressive Movement, women began to play an increasingly active role in Americ
an politics. Women had long been interested in reform. movements, but the number of women active in political affairs had been very limited. Now the educated, middle class woman began to grow tired of the passive role that men had assigned to her. Her own interests as a mother were brought into play by her concern over the education and welfare of her children, the city in which they lived, and such municipal facilities as play grounds, schools and parks. Her interests as a consumer were alerted by political struggles over tariffs, taxes, monopolies, and dishonesty in government. But more important than her interests were her sympathies, for she was shocked by the almost daily revelation about the terrible working conditions in the mills and mines of the country and the crowded conditions in which poor people lived in cities. Women began to develop their own heroines of charitable activity, like Jane Adams, the founder of the famous social settlement at Hull House in Chicago; and also to feel more strongly about their own political rights. Believing that they were far better equipped than men to introduce into politics the note of honesty and human concern that America seemed to need so badly, women in increasing numbers began to demand the right to vote. By 1914 they had that right in eleven states, and their efforts were crowned with final success in the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified in 1920.

It can be inferred from the passage that, before the Progressive Movement, educated women of the middle class were expected to ______.

A.stay out of politics

B.vote on municipal issues only

C.pay a tax in order to vote

D.improve conditions in mills and mines

Electronic books could revolutionize reading, but people ought to consider their far-reach
ing impacts as well. "The e-book promises to wreak a slow havoc (浩劫) on life as we know it," Jason Ohler, professor of technology assessment (评估), university of Alaska Southeast In Juneau, warned the World Future Society, Bethesda, Md. His assessment weighed the pros and cons (赞成和反对的理由) of e-book technology's impact on social relationships, the environment, the economy, etc. Before you curl up (蜷曲) with an e-book, consider the disadvantages.

They increase eyestrain due to poor screen resolution, replace a relatively cheap commodity with a more expensive one, and displace workers in print book production and traditional publishing. E-books make it easy to share data, thereby threatening copyright agreements and reducing compensation of authors, as well as creating nonbiodegradable (不可生物降解的) trash.

On the other hand, e-books save paper and trees, reduce the burden of the carrying and storing of printed books, promote self-sufficiency in learning, and make reading a collaborative experience online. They also create new jobs for writers and artists and encourage self-publishing.

In final analysis, Ohler points out, e-books should gain society's approval if a few conditions are met: make them biodegradable and recyclable, solve the problem of eye fatigue (疲劳), be sure the "have-nots" get the technology, and support e-book training in schools and business.

What is the author's purpose of writing the passage?

A.Draw people's attention to the disadvantages of e-books.

B.Call on people to reject e-books.

C.Criticize schools and business that don't provide e-books.

D.Encourage people to use e-books.

Talk to those people who first saw films when they were silent, and they will tell you the
experience was magic. The silent film had extraordinary powers to draw members of an audience into the story, and an equally potent capacity of make their imaginations work. It required the audience to become engaged—to supply voices and sound effects. The audience was the final, creative contributor to the process of making a film.

The finest films of the silent era depended on two elements that we can seldom provide today a large and receptive audience and a well-orchestrated score. For the audience, the fusion of picture and live music added up to more than the sum of the respective parts.

The one word that sums up the attitude of the silent filmmakers is enthusiasm, conveyed most strongly before formulas took shape and when there was more room for experimentation. This enthusiastic uncertainty often resulted in such accidental discoveries as new camera or editing techniques. Some films experimented with players; the 1915 film Regeneration, for example, by using real gangsters and streetwalkers, provided startling local color. Other films, particularly those of Thomas Ince, provided tragic endings as often as films by other companies supplied happy ones.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of silent films survive today in inferior prints that no longer reflect the care that the original technicians put into them. The modern versions of silent films may appear jerky and flickery, but the vast picture palaces did not attract four to six thousand people a night by giving them eyestrain. A silent film depends on its visuals; as soon as you degrade those, you lose elements that go far beyond the image on the surface. The acting in silent was often very subtle and very restrained, despite legends to the contrary.

In paragraph 2, the sentence" For the audience. . . parts, "indicates that______.

A.music was the most important element of silent films

B.silent films rely on a combination of music and image in affecting an audience

C.the importance of music in silent film has been overestimated

D.live music compensated for the poor quality of silent film images

We will find out the genetic code and conquer cancer. In l9th century operas, when the heroine coughs in the first act,the audience knows"she will die of tuberculosis in the third act.
