Making the Right Impression

The first thing to remember when you go for a job interview is that this is not a one-sided affair. Treat it as you would do in a negotiation. After all, both you and the prospective employer are selling something. If you approach an interview with the attitude of "any job will do", the interviewer will realize that immediately. If the job is worth anything, you won't get it.

You should prepare yourself for an interview just as you would do for a negotiation. Find out as much as you can about the company and the person who is to interview you. Don't be caught unawares. When asked about your interests, include group as well as individual activities/hobbies. Be on the lookout for tricky questions about your personal life. You don't need to lie; just sell yourself in the best light. This is something the interviewee needs to be able to do as well. You have the right to find out whether or not you want to work for the company. Furthermore, your interest in the nature of the Comply and how it is nm may well end up being your big selling point.

You'll never sell any product that is as important as yourself, so you want to do it right
. Selling yourself--in job interviews, in your performance on the job so you can earn a promotion ,and in working with outsiders so you can make yourself attractive to other companies and thus increase your career progress and your earning power--is your most basic selling job. Almost everybody in business must go through the process at least several times in his or her career.

Having been through the same experience myself several times, I have my own four main rules to follow. They have helped me ,and they can help you ,too:

Ⅰ. Show your future employers what you can do for them. What do you bring that's unique? To paraphrase President Kennedy: Ask not what your employer can de for you, but what you can do for your employer. Don't tell the person interviewing you what's on your resume(简历) , which they have already read. Tell them instead how you are going to do this job better than anyone else would ;make them think about how good the boss who hired you will look. In other words, sell your advantages, not your features. You do that by talking about your knowledge and your skills--the experience and contacts you have developed in your field and the abilities you have developed over your career.

Ⅱ. Maintain an open attitude. Openness is the quality that is essential in virtually every, kind of social and business talk if you are to be successful. Don't be so businesslike in your behaviour. Communicate your enthusiasm for the job. This is a refreshing characteristic that employers don't always find in job interviews, and the applicant who displays it sometimes will find out later it was the one quality that made a difference.

Ⅲ. Be prepared. Go over the key points you want to make about yourself. Even write them down on a yellow pad and review them several times before the interview. And don't duck(躲避) the hard questions, put them down and then figure out how you are going to answer them. If you've changed jobs three times in the past seven years, expect to be asked why. And if you want to go that extra mile, put yourself through a dress rehearsal(彩排) by having someone play the role of your future employer and "interview" you. That's an extremely effective technique, one that will give you a much better shot at getting that job.

Ⅳ. Ask questions. Asking questions is how you learn, and in a job interview you definitely want to learn about the company just as much as the company wants to learn about you.

You'll never have a better opportunity to get a feel for your future company or boss. Besides, employers respect someone who displays the initiative (主动) to ask intelligent questions about the company. Survey results indicate that smoking and alcohol and marijuana(大麻) use increased among residents of Manhattan during the 5~8 weeks after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center which took place on September 11, 2001. Almost one third of the nearly 1,000 persons interviewed reported an increased use of alcohol, marijuana, or cigarettes following the September 11th attacks. The largest increase was in alcohol use. 1About one fourth of the respondents said they were drinking more alcohol in the weeks after September 11; about 10% reported an increase in smoking, and 3.2% said they had increased their use of marijuana.

The investigators found survey participants by randomly dialing New York City phone numbers and screened (筛选) potential respondents for Manhattan residents living in areas close to the World Trade Center. Interviews were conducted with 988 individuals between October 16 and November 15, 2001. Participants were asked about their cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and marijuana use habits before and after September 11. During the week prior to September 11, 2001, 22.6% of the participants reported smoking cigarettes, 59.1% drinking alcohol, and 4.4% using marijuana. After September 11th, 23.4% reported smoking cigarettes, 64.4% drinking alcohol, and 5.7% smoking marijuana. Among those who smoked, almost 10% reported smoking at least an extra pack of cigarettes a week and among those who drank alcohol, more than 20% reported drinking at least one extra drink a day.

The researchers found that people who reported an increase in substance abuse were more likely to suffer from post traumatic(外伤的)stress disorder (PTSD) and from depression. People who reported an increase in cigarette smoking or marijuana use were also more likely to have both P1SD and depression, while those who reported an increase in alcohol use were more likely to have depression only. Persons who were living closer to the World Trade Center were more likely to increase their cigarette smoking, but other factors such as being displaced from home, losing possessions during the attacks, or being involved in the rescue efforts were not consistently associated with increased substance use. Symptoms of panic attack were associated with an increase in the use of all substances.

Increase in substance abuse did not differ significantly between men and women or among racial or ethnic groups. Demographic(人口统计学的) factors such ms age, marital status, and income seemed to play a more critical role in determining if the events of September 11th led to an increase in substance use.

itment methods.But the advantages of testing are not going to change the attraction of the interview to employers.The appeal of the interview has everything to do with the human factor.

Most people believe that they are a reasonable judge of character and trust their instinctive feelings.We might use some kind of test to aid the selection process, but we usually pick a candidate who interviews well, has good qualifications and an impressive work record.
