The aim of a letter of application(求职信) is to help you to "sell" yourself. It should state【21】the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have【22】. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without【23】out any necessary facts. In writing a letter of application, keep in【24】that the things a possible employer is most【25】to want to know about are your qualifications(条件), your achievements(成绩) and your aims. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part.【26】the first few sentences fail to【27】the reader's attention, the rest of the letter may not be【28】at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not【29】your own need or desires. For example, instead of beginning with "I saw your【30】in today's newspaper," you might say "I have made a careful【31】of your advertising during the past six months." or "I have made a survey(调查) in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives【32】your product and why they like it."

Try not to look ordinary. Be clear【33】the kind of job for which you are now【34】. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask, "What can I【35】in a letter? Employers want experience--which, naturally, no【36】has." The answer is that everything you have ever done is【37】

It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter.【38】a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something certain to do or expect. An excellent【39】is to enclose(内附) a stamped, self- addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it【40】for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

If there is any single factor that makes success in living, it is the ability to be benefi
ted by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze (分析) defeat and actually learn something from it in his next undertaking (从事的工作). Wrongly taking defeat for failure, you are sure indeed to fail, for it isn't defeat that makes you fail; it is your own refusal to see the guide and encouragement to success in defeat.

Defeats are nothing to be afraid of. They are common incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to get rid of its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success but nothing can cause within us such a strong wish to succeed. If you left a baby grasp a stick and try to pull it away, he will hold it more and moro tightly until his whole weight is hung up. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you make full use of the power which defeat gives; you can compete with it far more than you are able to.

How much does the writer know about success?

A.He knows at least several examples of success.

B.He knows every success in life.

C.He knows every success that has been achieved by man.

D.It is not referred to.

Passage One

Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.

Recently I attended several meetings where we talked about ways to retain students and keep younger faculty members from going elsewhere.

It seems higher education has become an industry of meeting-holders whose task it is to “solve” problems— real or imagined. And in my position as a professor at three different colleges, the actual problems in educating our young people and older students have deepened, while the number of people hired—not to teach but to hold meetings—has increased significantly. Every new problem creates a new job for an administrative fixer. Take our Center for Teaching Excellence. Contrary to its title, the center is a clearing house(信息交流中心)for using technology in classrooms and in online courses. It’s an administrative sham(欺诈)of the kind that has multiplied over the last 30 years.

I offer a simple proposition in response: Many of our problems—class attendance, educational success, student happiness and well-being—might be improved by cutting down the bureaucratic(官僚的)mechanisms and meetings and instead hiring an army of good teachers. If we replaced half of our administrative staff with classroom teachers, we might actually get a majority of our classes back to 20 or fewer students per teacher. This would be an environment in which teachers and students actually knew each other.

The teachers must be free to teach in their own way—the curriculum should be flexible enough so that they can use their individual talents to achieve the goals of the course. Additionally, they should be allowed to teach, and be rewarded for doing it well. Teachers are not people who are great at and consumed by research and happen to appear in a classroom. Good teaching and research are not exclusive, but they are also not automatic companions. Teaching is an art and a craft, talent and practice; it is not something that just anyone can be good at. It is utterly confusing to me that people do not recognize this, despite the fact that pretty much anyone who has been a student can tell the difference between their best and worst teachers.

46.What does the author say about present-day universities?

A.They are effectively tackling real or imagined problems.

B.They often fail to combine teaching with research.

C.They are over-burdened with administrative staff.

D.They lack talent to fix their deepening problems.

47.According to the author, what kind of people do universities lack most?A.Good classroom teachers.

B.Efficient administrators.

C.Talented researchers.

D.Motivated students.

48.What does the author imply about the classes at present?A.They facilitate students’ independent learning.

B.They help students form closer relationships.

C.They have more older students than before.

D.They are much bigger than is desirable.

50.What is the author’s suggestion for improving university teaching?A.Creating an environment for teachers to share their teaching experiences.

B.Hiring more classroom teachers and allowing them to teach in their own way.

C.Using high technology in classrooms and promoting exchange of information.

D.Cutting down meetings and encouraging administrative staff to go to classrooms. @@

In the earlier days of computer history, there was a quite widespread concern that compute
rs would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting of the functions of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons might be pushed, or that a computer might simply fail to work properly.

Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something had gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: For all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a device that can take the place of fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.

The main purpose of this passage is______.

A.to look back to the early days of computers

B.to explain what technical problems may occur with computers

C.to warn against a mentally lazy attitude towards computers

D.to discourage unnecessary investment in computers

Many relationship experts say that adding positive behaviors to the relationship has a much greater impact on couples'happiness. We should let go of expectations because it may fail our relationships.⑤, you should show loving acts often. Hand holding, touching, or a midday love email are all small ways of showing affection. According to the research, small gestures have a bigger impact on couple happiness than great, less often gestures.
