Learning how to write is like taking a course in public speaking. I ’d ask whether anyone

in class had ever taken such a course. Invariably a few hands would go up.

“What did you learn in that course?” I’d ask.

“Well, the main thing was learning how to face an audience, not to be inhibited (拘谨;抑制), not to be nervous, ”

Exactly, when you take a course in public speaking nowadays, you don’t hear much about grammar and vocabulary. Instead, you’re taught how not to be afraid or embarrassed, how to speak without a prepared script, how to reach out to the live audience before you. Public speaking is a matter of overcoming your longstanding nervous inhibitions.

It is the same in writing. The point of the whole thing is to overcome your nervous inhibi- tions, to break through the invisible barrier that separates you from the person who’ll read what y- ou wrote. You must learn to sit in front of your typewriter or dictating machine and reach out to the person at the other end of the line.

Of course, in public speaking, with the audience right in front of you, the problem is easier. Y ou can look at them and talk to them directly. In writing, you ’re alone. It needs an effort of your experience or imagination to take hold of that other person and talk to him or her. But that effort is necessary or at least it’s necessary until you’ve reached the point when you quite naturally and unconsciously “talk on paper.”

The main task of a public speech course is to ________.

A.teach spoken-language experience

B.teach how to use gestures to assist speech

C.help the learners overcome nervousness

D.teach how to control the volume of the speaker’s voice

Learning how to write is similar to learning how to speak in public in that a writer should ___________.A.overcome his or her nervousness in the first place

B.watch his or her grammar and vocabulary

C.collect a lot of data before writing

D.take hold of a reader and talk to him or her before writing

In the author’s opinion_________.A.writing needs more experience and skill than public speaking

B.both writing and public speaking require effort

C.writing is imaginative

D.public speaking is not so natural as writing

Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Not many students feel the need to learn public speaking

B.Training is necessary before you can speak with script

C.In public speaking, the audience are more nervous than the speaker

D.Writing is just like making a public speech on paper

This selection is mainly about learning how to _______.A.make a public speech

B.talk on paper

C.behave properly in public speech

D.express strong emotion on paper

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a hig
h school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.

Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.

Continuing education classes give some adults the chance to learn new skills. There are usually many kinds of classes to choose from, foreign cooking, auto repair, or furniture repair. These are only some of the classes available.

Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. For example, they can choose a class in almost any language as a second language. There are classes in first aid or classes in sewing. There are also many other types of classes to choose from.

Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. Overweight people can find exercise classes or classes in nutrition. Others can learn how to be good parents, or how to get along with other people.

There are many opportunities for adults to continue their learning. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings, or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.

Thousands of people register for continuing education classes each year. They receive no diploma or certificate, and no grade for most of the classes they attend. For them, learning is something they do because they want to.

Some adults go to continuing education classes to ______.

A.get a college education

B.learn new skills

C.get a certificate

D.earn grades

Having no language, infants cannot be told what they need to learn. Yet by the age of thre
e they will have mastered the basic structure of their native language and will be well on their way to communicative competence. Acquiring their language is a most impressive intellectual feat. Students of how children learn language generally agree that the most remarkable aspect of this feat is the rapid acquisition of grammar. Nevertheless, the ability of children to conform. to grammatical rules is only slightly more wonderful than their ability to learn words. It has been reckoned that the average high school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000 words, which includes idiomatic expressions and proper names of people and places. This vocabulary must have been learned over a period of 16 years. From the figures, it can be calculated that the average child learns at a rate of about 13 new words per day. Clearly a learning process of great complexity goes on a rapid rate in children.

What is the main subject of the passage?

A.Language acquisition in children.

B.Teaching languages to children.

C.How to memorize words.

D.Communicating with infants.
