Life really should be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at

their feet.

Internationally famous child doctor Robert Coles is the world's top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, "The Privileged Ones", and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. "Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich," says the 53-year-old doctor, "such as better health, education and future work prospects. (78) But most important is the quality of family life. Money can't buy love."

It can buy a lot of other thing, however, and that's where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Overindulgence (娇美) by their parents can make them spoilt. They tent to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness.

(79) "But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world," adds Mr. Coles, "and they are more self-assured." The rich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high income. So money will never be one of their problems. "However, they will have a sense of isolation," warns Dr. Coles, "and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really, be given the chance. Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that."

(80) Today's wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children. So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

In his book "The Privileged Ones", Dr. Cotes implies that ______.

A.there are fewer problem in the rich family than the poor family

B.rich children live a life of separation from the world

C.rich children usually enjoy more love than poor children

D.the quality of rich children's family life may not be high

Don't believe all of the stereotypes (模式化管理) you may have heard about Americans. Even the ones that are true in general may not be true about specific individuals or a large part of the population. For example, although Americans tend to be louder than people from other cul-tures(especially at athletic events), many of the people you meet will be quiet and polite. Some people may be intolerant, but most will be pleasant and welcoming. Remember that American films and television exaggerate(夸张)in order to generate excitement, and so present a rather false picture of what life in the United States is really like. Therefore, tourists in the US are not always on their best behavior.

Americans do tend to be more informal than people from other countries. It is common for Americans to wear casual clothing to school and to greet professors by first name. However, good manners and politeness are always appreciated. If you are polite, and dress a little more formally than your American friends, it will not be poorly thought of.

However, some businesses require their employees to wear a uniform. or a suit. It would be improper to wear a T-shirt and blue jeans to a job interview. Some of the more prestigious restaurants require a coat and tie. Americans tend to dress up for cultural events(the opera, theater and ballet)and to dress down for athletic events. Formal wear is required at weddings and funerals, or any other event with religious event. If you rely on the stereotypes, you will likely put yourself into an embarrassing situation

The underlined sentence probably means_____.

A.Some of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans are not true

B.You should not believe the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans

C.None of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans should be believed

D.None of the stereotypes you may have heard about Americans should not be believed

Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and r
eligious leaders tell us" the truth". We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can't be bad for us.

However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors' own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean , however, that professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing.

If your premises (前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way. Professors don't tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think.

On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.

In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people______.

A.easily accept certain things without a second thought

B.grow up through learning certain things in life

C.are forming their views during their growth

D.have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old

The war was the most peaceful period of my life. The window of my bedroom faced south-east
. I always woke up with the first light and, with all the responsibilities of the previous day melted, felt myself rather like the sun, ready to shine and feel joy. Life never seemed so simple and clear and full of possibilities as then. I stuck my feet out under the sheets--I called them Mrs. Left and Mrs. Right--and invented dramatic situations for them in which they discussed the problems of the day. At least Mrs. Right did; she easily showed her feelings, but I didn't have the same control of Mrs. Left, so she mostly contented herself with nodding agreement.

They discussed what Mother and I should do during the day, what Santa Claus should give a fellow for Christmas, and what steps should be taken to brighten the home. There was that little matter of the baby, for instance. Mother and I could never agree about that. Ours was the only house in the neighborhood without a new baby, and Mother said we couldn't afford one till Father came back from the war because it cost seventeen and six. That showed how foolish she was. The Geneys up the road had a baby, and everyone knew they couldn't afford seventeen and six. It was probably a cheap baby, and Mother wanted something really good, but I felt she was too hard to please. The Geneys' baby would have done us fine. Having settled my plans for 'the day, I got up, put a chair under my window, and lifted the frame. high enough to stick out my head. The window overlooked the front gardens of the homes behind ours, and beyond these it looked over a deep valley to the tall, red-brick house up the opposite hillside, which were all still shadow, while those on our side of the valley were all lit up, though with long storage shadows that made them seem unfamiliar, stiff and painted.

The boy usually felt ________ early in the morning.

A.frightened

B.cheerful

C.worded

D.puzzled
