Generally speaking, people want to keep a wild animal as a pet for one of many reasons: th
ey want to impress other people by owning an unusual, uncommon animal as a pet. In no case is the happiness of the animal at the heart of the matter.

If you do want to own a wild animal, for instance a fox (usually a little larger than your average house cat), you have to take this test first: go to your nearest Humane Society Shelter and bring home a grown cat and a very active dog. Raise them and be with them; consider them your best friends. Do not leave them alone for more than 9 hours in any given day; do not hit them or shout at them; and do not abuse them in any way. If, after two years, both animal are alive and are still with you without your caging them or locking them in a part of your home most of the day, then maybe you have what it takes to own a wild animal.

If the test sounds stupid or unworkable, or if you just can’t bring yourself to stand such unlovable animals for two years, then you are not suited to owning a fox.

The problem here is in the definition of the word pet. A pet is something you keep in your house or around your yard as a companion---- a companion who is usually prevented from escaping one way or another. Some animals---- dogs and cats, will voluntarily stay with a human even if given the chance to get away. In this sense, dogs and cats are true pets. Please don’t make the life of some wild animals a living hell by trying to raise one as a pet.

Which reason is true for people keeping a wild animal as a pet in the passage?

A.They want to show off to other people

B.Wild animals are orderly.

C.They just want to keep a wild animal for business purpose

D.They love wild animals heartily.

To pass the test, you must make it certain that ____.A.you take the trying animals with you most of the time

B.you are kind to the trying animals

C.the trying animals are still in good condition in two years.

D.all of the above

It can be inferred that of all the animals mentioned in the passage a ____ is the most difficult one to keep as a pet.A.wild pig

B.fox

C.tiger

D.dog

According to the author, you can raise a wild animal if you ____.A.think the test ridiculous

B.can’t bear dogs and cats

C.may work more than 9 hours

D.may raise the trying animals well for 2 years.

Last Thursday a doctor came m our school to talk about the harm of smoking. He said he wou
ldn't go on for too long, and we saw him take his wrest-watch off and lay it on the table. I can't remember what he said about smoking, because Bob and I had other things to think about. He fin ished when the bell rang for play-time, and the headmaster told us to go out.

In the playground Bob showed me the watch. He put it on his wrist, and it looked love ly. I wished I had been the one to sit by the table. It was really a beautiful watch, gold by the look of it. The headmaster came outside then, and the doctor was with him. They walked about, looking around and talking all the time. After a while the bell rang, and we got into our lines, ready to go in.

The headmaster said, "I've got a little job for boys. This doctor, who was giving us a talk just now, has lost his watch in the playground. It happened before, he says- it just slips off his wrist. So look around for it, will you? See if you're clever enough to find it. I promise that the boy who does so will get a useful reward."

Of course, Bob was not going to miss a chance like that. He's just about the luckiest boy in the school rewards just drop into his hands. We all walked about the playground, looking here and there for the watch. And I wasn't at all surprised when Bob bent down as if he was picking something up. Then he hurried past me towards the doctor.

"Where are you going?" I called out, though I knew very well where he was going. The next minute there was Bob, all smiles, handing over the watch to the old doctor and hanging about for the reward.

But the doctor did not seem at all pleased. In fact he looked quite ready to thrust (插入) a knife in Bob's heart-until the headmaster burst out laughing. Bob told me later the old man hadn't even said "Thank you" for the watch.

The thing that puzzled us most of all was that Bob didn't get any reward. When he mentioned to the headmaster about k, the old man said, "Ah, yes, we mustn't forget that. I said ' a useful re ward' , didn't I?" Then he gave Bob a big sheet of paper and told him to write a composition on the harm of smoking. Bob says he hasn't got any idea of what to write.

While the doctor was talking about the harm to smoking, the two boys were______.

A.not thinking about anything

B.thinking about the harm of smoking

C.thinking about the watch and how to get it, perhaps

D.thinking that the headmaster was very clever

The teenage years should be the best years of your life!

Young people often hear adults say this, but many teenagers disagree. They simply don’t feel like they’re in the midst of their best years. The pressures of school exams and concerns about relationships with family and friends create a great deal of stress for the average teenager. Many find ways to cope with the stress. But for a large number of teens, their problems seem impossible to deal with. When this happens, the young person may fall into depression.

In mainland China, a survey found that 16 percent of college students suffered from fear, anxiety, or depression. Increasing mental health problems have prompted the government to look for possible solutions.

This growing trend extends beyond Asia, too. Studies in the U.S. and the UK show that teenage depression is on the rise. A 2004 report stated that emotional problems among Britain’s youth have increased by 70 percent over the past 25 years.

Faced with these startling numbers, mental health professionals are hoping to raise awareness. Depression can range from mild unhappiness to thoughts of suicide. For this reason, adults should take the illness seriously. Parents can do this by learning about the causes and symptoms of teen depression.

Some factors that may lead to teenage depression are:

●Overwhelming expectations by parents and other adults

●Parental separation or divorce

●Death of a loved one

●Moving to a new location

●Physical illness

Most of the time when teens are depressed, there’something wrong in their lives, says UCLA psychology professor Constance Hammen. Kids often get depressed because bad things happen to them that they don’t have the coping skills to deal with.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of depression, you need to talk with someone. There’s no shame in being depressed. Most people suffer from it at one time or another.Unfortunately , feelings of depression may cause you to feel hopeless about your life and your future. But another person can help you put things in perspective.

Door-Knocking

Door-knocking is the most effective way of making face-to-face community contact, but it has become a lost art. With the recent focus on customer privacy, door-knocking seems like an intrusion into other people' s lives. But those who try it for the first time are usually surprised by the pleasant reception they receive. Here are some suggestions that will help you promote your services face-toface.

BEFORE YOU GO OUT

◆ Begin with a door hanger

Try leaving a door hanger two days before you go door-knocking. It should briefly describe the project and say that someone will be around in person.

◆ Wear an official name tag

Door-knockers should wear name tags with the logo of their organization. The best name tags will also include a color photo and the name of the caller.

◆ Have people knock their own blocks

The easiest way to do door-knocking is to try your local area first. Being a neighbor creates an immediate connection with the person answering the door; after that, everything else is easy.

◆ Find a good excuse to door-knock

A short survey about local concerns or a current project is a good excuse. Figure out responses for various situations. What if the person who answers the door cannot speak English? What if a child answers the door?

WHEN YOU GO OUT

◆ When to go and what to do first

The best times to knock are usually Saturdays. On other days, after dinner is ideal. When someone answers the door, smile and introduce yourself; say you are a volunteer and, if it helps, state where you live. Give the name of your organization and, briefly, the reason for the visit.

◆ State what action the other person should take and the benefits

Tell the person what they need to do and how their actions will benefit themselves and others. If a person hesitates, emphasize benefits you' ve already mentioned and then, if necessary, add further benefits. If a person agrees, follow up immediately. If possible, get a donation,a signature, or a promise.

◆ Record contact information on the spot

Record names, addresses, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and responses to questions on the spot. You won' t remember them later!

(1)Why does the author say that door-knocking has become a lost art?

A. It is not effective, no one will take this method any more.

B. People focus on privacy increasingly, so door-knocking seems like an intrusion into other people' s lives

C. It is very difficult to do door-knocking, no one knows how to do it now.

(2) Which step should be firstly taken when you try door-knocking?

A. Find a good excuse to door-knock

B. Wear an official name tag

C. Leave a door hanger

(3) What does the underlined phrase “on the spot” mean?

A. without delay

B. at some place

C. in a difficult situation

(4) Which time is not appropriate for door knocking?

A. Saturday afternoon

B. Monday morning.

C. Thursday evening.

(5) Who will receive pleasant reception when they try door-knocking?

A. A stranger who is not living in this community and gives no notice for his/her visit.

B. An offensive acquaintance who comes at any time.

C. A neighbor who does good preparation and has significant project to introduce.
