Strong bonds can exist in dating relationships. My cousin Candice and her friend Louis sta
rted dating casually last year. As the months passed, they began seeing only each other, and now they enjoy a close relationship. They are neither married or engaged but are constant companions and consider each other best friends. Candice's friends think of them as a couple and recognize their special relationship.

Both Candice and Louis have made commitments to each other. They think of themselves as couple. However, each has the freedom to develop new friends, to seek separate social activities, to build separate careers, and to have his or her individual needs fulfilled.

Living together can be the transition from extended dating to marriage. Just recently, Louis and Candice decided to live together. They are not sure about marriage and want to try living together first. Louis has many divorced friends who had rushed into marriage. He doesn't want to make a similar mistake. He knows that living together will not be easy, but feels he has few alternatives. Friends and family will exert pressure on the couple to get married. Louis knows that this is the worst reason to get married. He believes that living together will provide Candice and him with an opportunity to see how well each can adjust to the other's feelings and living styles. He hopes they will discover whether they are compatible.

Louis moved into Candice's apartment this weekend. Books, records, and clothing fit in nicely. Of course, they will have to decide what to do with two couches, two beds, twenty-two pots and pans, and duplicates of all kitchen and bath items. They have settled in as an unmarried-married couple and will have to make the same adjustments as any newlyweds.

The special relationship between Candice and Louis prevents them from ______.

A.having new friends

B.developing individual careers

C.having their social activities together all the time

D.realizing separate needs

Most English people have three names: a first name, a middle name and the family name. The
ir family name comes last. For example, my full name is Jim Allan Green. Green is my family name. My parents gave me both of my other names.

People don't use their middle names very much. So" John Henry Brown" is usually called "John Brown". People never use Mr.; Mrs. or Miss before their first names. So you can say John Brown, or Mr. Brown; but you should never say Mr. John. They use Mr. , Mrs. or Miss with the family name but never with the first name.

Sometimes people ask me about my name. "When were you born, why did your parents call you Jim?" they ask. "Why did they choose that name? The answer is they didn't call me Jim. They called me James. James was the name of my grandfather'. In England, people usually call me Jim for short. That's because it is shorter and easier than James.

Most English people have ______ name(s).

A.one

B.two

C.three

D.four

I fell in love with the minister's son in winter when I turned fourteen. He was not Chines
e.For Christmas I prayed for the boy, Robert. When I found out that my parents had invited the minister' s family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried in panic What would' Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners?

On Christmas Eve, my mother created abundant Chinese food. And then they arrived—the minister's family and all my relatives.Robert greeted hello, and I pretended he was not worthy of existence.

Dinner threw me deeper into disappointment. My relatives licked(舔)the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table.Robert and his family waited patiently for a large plate to be passed to them.My relatives murmured with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish.Robert made a face. Then my father reached his chopsticks just below the fish eye and picked out the soft meat. "Amy, your favorite, " he said, offering me the tender fish cheek.I wanted to disappear.

At the end of the meal, my father leaned back and burped(打嗝)loudly, thanking my mother for her fine cooking."It' s a police Chinese custom to show you are satisfied, "explained my father to our astonished guests.Robert was looking down at his plate with a reddish face. The minister managed to bring up a quiet burp.I was shocked into silence for the rest of the night.

After everyone had gone, my mother said to me, "You want to be the shame as American girls on the outside. "She handed me an early gift. It was a miniskirt. "But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame. "

It was not until years later that I was able to fully appreciate her lesson and the purpose behind her particular menu. For Christmas Eve that year, she had chosen excellent Chinese food.

When I found out the minister' s family would come for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried mainly because______.

A.I worried about our shabby Chinese Christmas

B.I worried about our Chinese relatives lacking American manners

C.I worried about meeting the minister' s family

D.I worried about being laughed at
