Eating in space is different from eating on earth. The food that astronauts carry with the
m does not look like the food you eat. Some food is carried in closed bags. It is cooked and frozen before the astronauts get it. All the water is removed from the food. In the spaceship the astronaut puts the water back. He "shoots" hot or cold water into the food bag with a special gun. He eats the food through a small hole in the bag.

Other foods come in bite size. The astronaut puts a whole piece in his mouth at once. There can be no crumbs. Crumbs would float around the spaceship and get in the way. Meat and cake often come in bite-sixed pieces. Astronauts can' t drink water from open cups. The water would float in drops in the air. The water is put in the special gun. The astronaut shoots the water into his mouth. Eating in space is not easy. Astronauts must learn this way.

Some space foods are carded in ______ .

A.water guns

B.lunch boxes

C.closed bags

D.food bags

A new kind of radar has been developed for spaceship travelers. A working laboratory model
of a new system of radar that makes use of a beam of light is said to be ten thousand times more accurate than the best comparable system of radar that used microwaves.

The model has shown that this radar system, known as laser-doppler radar, can measure with absolute precision speeds varying from spaceship orbital injection (进入) velocities (速度) of five miles per second down to virtual stops--speeds of less than one ten thousandth of an inch per second. According to the scientists who are developing this system, such fine measures of velocity are of prime importance in space missions. In a rendezvous (对接) between two spaceships, or in a landing approach by a vehicle onto an orbiting space station, a bump could rip open a ship's skin, or a nudge could knock the station out of its orbit.

The light-beam radar, which operates at a frequency of trillions (百万兆) of cycles per second, could easily detect and measure the movement of a vehicle edging up to a satellite space station. A control system using so precise a signal as this would allow a huge vehicle to dock at a space station as lightly as a feather.

Laser-doppler radar ______. ()

A.measures the movements of a spaceship by means of light beam

B.makes use of microwaves

C.makes use of sound waves

D.Both A and B

Robots May Allow Surgery in Space

Small robots designed by University of Nebraska researchers may allow doctors on Earth to help perform. surgery on patients in space.

The tiny, wheeled robots, (51)are about 3 inches tall and as wide as a lipstick case, can be slipped into small incisions(切口)and computer-controlled by surgeons in different locations. Some robots are equipped(52)cameras and lights and can send images back to surgeons and others have surgical tools attached that can be(53)remotely.

“We think this is going to (54)open surgery, ”Dr Dmitry Oleynikov said at a news conference. Oleynikov is a (55)in computer-assisted surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Officials hope that NASA will teach(56)to use the robots soon enough so that surgeries could one day be performed in space.

On earth, the surgeons could control the robots themselves(57)other locations. For example, the robots could enable surgeons in other places to (58)on injured soldiers on the front line. Researchers plan tp seek federal regulatory(59)early nest year. Tests on animals have been successful, and tests on humans in England will begin very soon.

The camera-carrying robots can provide(60)of affected areas and the ones with surgical tools will be able to maneuver(操控)inside the body in ways surgeons' hands can't. The views from the camera-carrying robots are (61)than the naked eye, because they(62)back color images that are magnified(放大). Because several robots can be inserted through one incision, they could reduce the amount and (63)of cuts needed for surgery, which would decrease recovery time. This is particularly(64)to those patients who have been debilitated(使虚弱)by long illness.

Eventually, Oleynikov said, the tiny robots may enable surgeons to work without ever(65)their hands in patients' bodies. “That's the goal, ”Oleynikov said. “It's getting easier and easier. We can do even more with these devices. ”

People landing at London’S Heathrow airport have something new to look at as they fly overBritain’S capital city.It is attractive, simple and a little strange. The Millennium Dome is a huge semi-circle of plastic and steel and it contains the largest public space in the world. It has been built to house an exhibition of all that is best in British life, learning and leisure.

The Millennium Dome was designed by Sir Richard Rogers, one of British’S most famous architects. His work points the way to new developments in buildin9.Think of it as a giant symbol of the buildings in which we will all be living and working in the near future.

Buildings are also a part of history. They express the culture of the times.Sir Richard Rogers is aware of this responsibility. While different designers have individual styles, their work also has a common style. That is:to express the values of the information age.

What is an“information age”building? The dome is a good example. After the Millennium exhibition ends,it will be used for another purpose.Just as people no longer have“jobs for life”,modem buildings are designed for a number of different use for another Richard Roger’s building, the Pompidous Center(蓬皮杜艺术中心)in paris, uses the idea that information is communication.Instead of being hidden in the walls, heating pipes and elevators are open to public view. The Pompidous Center is a very honest building. It tells you how it works.

No matter how many times you have seen images of the golden mask of boyking Tutankhamen, c
ome face to face with it in Egypts Cairo museum, and you will suck in your breath. It was on Nov. 4, 1923, that British archaeologist Howard Carter stumbled on a stone at the base of the tomb of another pharaoh(法老)in Luxor that eventually led to a sealed doorway. Then, on Nov. 23, Carter found a second door and when he stuck his head through it, what he saw was to suck the world. Inside lay the great stone coffin, enclosing three chests of gilded wood. A few months later, when a crane lifted its granite cover and one coffin after another was removed; Carter found a solid block of gold weighing 110kg. In it was the mummy(木乃伊)of the 19-year-old Tutankhamen, covered in gold with that splendid funeral mask. And all this lay buried for more than 3, 000 years. Months after my trip to Egypt, I can relive the rush of emotion I felt and sense the hush that descended on the crammed Cairo museums Tutankhamen gallery. Cairo, a dusty city of 20 million people, is a place where time seems to both stand still and rush into utter chaos. It is a place where the ancient and contemporary happily go along on parallel tracks. Take the Great Pyramids of Giza, sitting on the western edge of the city. Even as the setting sun silhouettes these gigantic structures against the great desert expanse, a call for prayer floats over semifinished apartment blocks filled with the activity of city life. While careful planning for the afterlife may lie buried underground in Cairo, it is noise and confusion on the streets. Donkey carts battle for space with pedestrians and the only operative road rule is " might is right. " But it is a city that is full of life—from the small roadside restaurants to the coffee shops where men and women smoke the shisha(水烟壶). Donkey carts piled high with flat-breads magically find their way in and out the maddening traffic; young women in long skirts and headscarves hold hands with young men in open collar shirts, while conversations dwell on Kuwaits chances at the soccer World Cup.

According to the context, "suck in your breath" means "feel a sense of______".

A.awe

B.horror

C.doubt

D.delight
