Psychologists have discovered that even the most independent-minded of us will conform

Psychologists have discovered that even the most independent-minded of us will conform. to social pressure when we are with a group of people. In one classie experiment, people were showna vertical line and asked to find a line of identical length from a selection of three.

You might think that this is an absurdly easy task, and when people perform. it by themselves they do it very well. However, psychologists have discovered that we are very easily swayed by the opinions of other people when we do this task in a group. In one study, a group of three people was set up,where two of the people were confederates(同伙 )of the experimenter. When the confederates deliberately gave wrong answers, people were often swayed to give the wrong answer also. In fact, 75% of people gave at least o ne wrong answer, with some people conforming to peer pressure on every occasion.

But why do people conform. in this way? In an easy task like this, it seems that people do not want to step out of line with the prevailing opinion of the group. On more difficult tasks, people also conform. because they lose onfidence in their own ability to make decisions and prefer to trust the majority opinion instead.

A typical example of this kind of conformity arises when we come across people in distress. Would you help a woman who has been attacked in the street? It turns out that you are much more likely to go to her assistance if you are alone. When other people are also around,a diffusion of responsibility occurs. People are paralysed into inaction, because everyone assumes that someone else will go to the woman' s assistance.

A.explain why people would be influenced by the opinions of others

B.prove that people are easily influenced by the opinions of others

C.train the confederates of the experimenter as independent-minded

D.describe how people would be influenced by the opinions of others

A.thinks he has no responsibilities to give a hand

B.thinks he has has nothing to do with it

C.is too shy to give his helping hand

l cuts and treatments at the salon are carried out by one of the salon’s three senior stylists. The salon also has two salon assistants and two junior stylists.

Every customer attending the salon is first seen by a salon assistant, who washes their hair; next, by a senior stylist, who cuts or treats the hair depending on which service the customer wants; then finally, a junior stylist who dries their hair. The average length of time spent with each member of staff is as follows:

It seems that beauty and women are twins. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV sc
reen, radio programs, magazines and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged (包围) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?

But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called "aunt" or "granny" can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart and concern for others.

In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real.

Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one's heart and looks.

Why does the author say that beauty and women are twins?

A.Women are born to be beauties.

B.Women like to show off their beauties

C.Women are proud of their beauty

D.Women try to maintain their beauty by dressing up

One of the good things for men in women's liberation is that men no longer have to pay wom
en the old-fashioned courtesies.

In an article on the new manners, Ms. Holmes says that a perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public as if she were a model. For example, she doesn't need help getting in and out of cars. She also says there is no reason why a man should walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk.

As far as manners are concerned, I suppose I have always been a supporter of women's liberation. Over the years, out of a sense of respect, I imagine, I have refused to trouble women with outdated courtesies.

It is usually easier to follow rules of social behaviour than to depend on one's own taste. But rules may be safely broken, of course, by those of us with the gift of natural grace. For example, when a man and woman are led to their table in a restaurant and the waiter pulls out a chair, the woman is expected to sit in the chair. That is according to Ms. Ann Clark. I have always done it the other way, according to my wife.

It came up only the other night. I followed the hostess to the table, and when she pulled the chair out I sat on it, quite naturally, since it happened to be the chair I wanted to sit in.

"Well, "my wife said, when the hostess had gone, "you did it again."

"Did what?" I asked, utterly confused.

"Took the chair."

Actually, since I'd walked. through the restaurant ahead of my wife, it would have been awkward, I should think, not to have taken the chair. I had got there first, after all.

Also, it has always been my custom to get in a car first, and let the woman get in by herself. This is a courtesy I insist on as the stronger sex, out of love and respect. In times like these, there might be attackers hidden about. It would be unsuitable to put a woman in a car then shut the door on her, leaving her at the mercy of some bad fellow who might be hiding in the back seat.

It can be concluded from the passage that______.

A.men should walk on the inside of a sidewalk

B.women are becoming more capable than before

C.in women's liberation men are also liberated

D.it's safe to break rules of social behaviour

Few Americans remain in one position or one place for a lifetime. We moving from town to c
ity to suburb, from high school to college in a different state, from a job in one region to a better job elsewhere, from the home where we raise our children to the home where we plan to live in retirement. With each moving we are forever making new friends, who become part of our new life at that time.

For many of us summer is a special time for forming new friendships. Today millions of Americans vacation abroad, and they go not only to see new sights but also with the hope of meeting new people. No one really expects a vacation trip to produce a close friend, but the beginning of a friendship is possible.

The word "friend" can be applied to a wide range of relationships—to someone one has known for a few weeks in a new place, to a fellow worker, to a childhood playmate, to a man or woman, to a trusted confidant (知己) .

The reasons why many Americans move from place to place are as follows except______.

A.saving money

B.getting a better job

C.going to college

D.finding a place to spend the rest of the life

women the old-fashioned courtesies.

2 In an article on the new manners, Ms. Holmes says that a perfectly able woman no longer has to act helplessly in public as if she were a model. For example, she doesn't need help getting in and out of cars. "Women get in and out of cars twenty times a day with babies and dogs. Surely they can get out by themselves at night just as easily."

3 She also says there is no reason why a man should walk on the outside of a woman on the sidewalk. "Historically, the man walked on the inside so he caught the garbage thrown out of a window. Today a man is supposed to walk on the outside. A man should walk where he wants to. So should a woman. If, out of love and respect, he actually wants to take the blows, he should walk on the inside — because that's where attackers are all hiding these days."

Corfe Co is a business which manufactures computer laptop batteries and it has developed a new battery which has a longer usage time than batteries currently available in laptops. The selling price of the battery is forecast to be $45.

The maximum production capacity of Corfe Co is 262,500 units. The company’s management accountant is currently preparing an annual flexible budget and has collected the following information so far:

The following scenario relates to questions 6–10.C

In addition to the above costs, the management accountant estimates that for each increment of 50,000 units produced, one supervisor will need to be employed. A supervisor’s annual salary is $35,000.

The production manager does not understand why the flexible budgets have been produced as he has always used a fixed budget previously

Assuming the budgeted figures are correct, what would the flexed total production cost be if production is 80% of maximum capacity?

A.$2,735,000

B.$2,770,000

C.$2,885,000

D.$2,920,000

In the first month of production of the new battery, actual sales were 18,000 units and the sales revenue achieved was $702,000. The budgeted sales units were 17,300.

Based on this information, which of the following statements is true?

A.When the budget is flexed, the sales variance will include both the sales volume and sales price variances

B.When the budget is flexed, the sales variance will only include the sales volume variance

C.When the budget is flexed, the sales variance will only include the sales price variance

D.When the budget is flexed, the sales variance will include the sales mix and quantity variances and the sales price variance

Which of the following statements relating to the preparation of a flexible budget for the new battery are true?

(1) The budget could be time-consuming to produce as splitting out semi-variable costs may not be straightforward

(2) The range of output over which assumptions about how costs will behave could be difficult to determine

(3) The flexible budget will give managers more opportunity to include budgetary slack than a fixed budget

(4) The budget will encourage all activities and their value to the organisation to be reviewed and assessed

A.1 and 2 only

B.1, 2 and 3

C.1 and 4

D.2, 3 and 4

The management accountant intends to use a spreadsheet for the flexible budget in order to analyse performance of the new battery.

Which of the following statements are benefits regarding the use of spreadsheets for budgeting?

(1) The user can change input variables and a new version of the budget can be quickly produced

(2) Errors in a formula can be easily traced and data can be difficult to corrupt in a spreadsheet

(3) A spreadsheet can take account of qualitative factors to allow decisions to be fully evaluated

(4) Managers can carry out sensitivity analysis more easily on a budget model which is held in a spreadsheet

A.1, 3 and 4

B.1, 2 and 4

C.1 and 4 only

D.2 and 3

The management accountant has said that a machine maintenance cost was not included in the flexible budget but needs to be taken into account.

The new battery will be manufactured on a machine currently owned by Corfe Co which was previously used for a product which has now been discontinued. The management accountant estimates that every 1,000 units will take 14 hours to produce. The annual machine hours and maintenance costs for the machine for the last four years have been as follows:

The following scenario relates to questions 6–10.C

What is the estimated maintenance cost if production of the battery is 80% of maximum capacity (to the nearest $’000)?

A.$575,000

B.$593,000

C.$500,000
