There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement.
We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertisement. However, if large scale advertisement leads to in creased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.
It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.
Advertisement is often used to ______ .
A.deceive customers
B.increase production
C.arouse suspicion
D.push the sale

Specialization is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one can be paid an amount equivalent to their share of the product.
Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal.
The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties’ desires and preferences.
Thirdly, money acts as store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a product could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on end would involve obvious disadvantages. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided.
Using money as a medium of exchange means that_____.
A.you have to sell something in order to buy something
B.you have to buy something in order to sell something
C.you don’t have to buy something in order to sell something
D.the seller and the purchaser are the same person
Specialization is encouraged because_______.A.people can use their money to buy whatever they want
B.people get paid according to their share of the product.
C.people pay great attention to the manufacture of a product
D.people cannot use their money to buy whatever they want
A barter economy is one in which _______.A.value is decided by weight
B.value is decided by number
C.money is used and goods are not exchanged
D.goods are exchanged and money is not used
If one had to save products instead of money, __________.A.this would need years of practice
B.coal, for example, would lose its value
C.they could not be stored for years on end
D.many products would lose their value
How many advantages of money are mentioned in this passage?A.Two
B.Three
C.Four
D.Five

(7) The market value of the long-term borrowings of HFG is equal to the book value.
(8) The directors are concerned about the return on investment (ROI) generated by the Beetown centre and they are
considering using sensitivity analysis in order to show how a target ROI of 20% might be achieved.
(9) The marketing director stated at a recent board meeting that ‘The Group’s success depends on the quality of
service provided to our clients. In my opinion, we need only to concern ourselves with the number of complaints
received from clients during each period as this is the most important performance measure for our business.
The number of complaints received from clients is a perfect performance measure. As long as the number of
complaints received from clients is not increasing from period to period, then we can be confident about our
future prospects’.
Required:
(a) The directors of HFG have asked you, as management accountant, to prepare a report providing them with
explanations as to the following:
(i) Which of the three centres is the most ‘successful’? Your report should include a commentary on return
on investment (ROI), residual income (RI), and economic value added (EVA) as measures of financial
performance. Detailed calculations regarding each of these three measures must be included as part of
your report;

"There were so many misperceptions out there about education and marriage that I decided to sort out the facts," said economist Betsey Stevenson, an assistant professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. So along with Wharton colleague Adam Isen, Stevenson calculated national marriage data from 1950 to 2008 and found that the marriage penalty women once paid for being well educated has largely disappeared.
"In other words, the difference in marriage rates between those with college degrees and those without is very small," said Stephanie Coontz, a family historian at Evergreen State College. The new analysis also found that while high-school dropouts(辍学学生) had the highest marriage rates in the 1950s, today college-educated women are much more likely to marry than those who don't finish high school.
Of course, expectations have changed dramatically in the last half century. "In the 1950s, a lot of women thought they needed to marry right away," Coontz said. "Real wages were rising so quickly that men in their 20s could afford to marry early. But they didn't want a woman who was their equal. Men needed and wanted someone who knew less." In fact, she said, research published in 1946 documented that 40 percent of college women admitted to playing dumb on dates. "These days, few women feel the need to play down their intelligence or achievements," Coontz said.
The new research has more good news for college grads. Stevenson said the data indicate that modern college-educated women are more likely to be married before age 40, are less likely to divorce, and are more likely to describe their marriages as "happy". The marriages of well-educated women tend to be more stable because the brides are usually older as well as wiser, Stevenson said.
Not long ago, it was believed that women went to college in order to ______.
A.find a husband
B.get smart in the marriage market
C.learn to be a good wife
D.marry someone with a bachelor's degree
However there is another important part of the jobs picture that was targely ovedookcd. There was a big jump in the number of people who report voluntarily working part-time. This figure is now 830,000(4,4 percent)above its year ago level.
Before explaining the connection to the Obamacare, it is worth making an important distinction. Many people who work part-time jobs actually want full-time jobs. They take part-time work because this is all they can get. An increase in involuntary part-time work is evidence of weakness in the labor market and it means that many people will be having a very hard time making ends meet. There was an increase in involuntary part-time in June, but the general direction has been down. Involuntary part-time employment is still far higher than before the recession, but it is down by 640,000(9 percent)from its year ago level.
We know the difference between voluntary and involuntary part-time employment because people tell us. The survey used by the Labor Department asks people if they worked less than 35 hours in the reference week. If the answer is "yes."they are classified as working part-time. The survey then asks whether they worked less than 35 hours in that week because they wanted to work less than full time or because they had no choice. They are only elassified as voluntary part-time workers if they tell the survey taker they chose to work less than 35 hours a week.
The issue of voluntary part-time relates to Obamacare becanse one of the main purposes was to allow people to get insurance outside of employment. For many people, especially those with serious health conditions or family members with serious health conditions, before Obamacare the only way to get insurance was through a job that provided health insurance.
However, Obamacare has allowed more than 12 million people to either get insurance through Medicaid or the exchanges. These are people who may previously have felt the need to get a full-time job that provided insurance in order to cover themselves and their families. With Obamacare there is no longer a link between employment and insurance.
36. Which part of the jobs picture was neglected?
A.The prospect of a thriving job market.
B.The increase of voluntary part-time jobs.
C.The possibility of full employment.
D.The acceleration of job creation.
Many people work part-time because they___________________A.prefer part-time jobs to full-time jobs
B.feel that is enough to make ends meet
C.cannot get their hands on full-time jobs
D.haven' t seen the weakness of the market
The text mainly discusses___________________.A.employment in the US
B.part-timer classification
C.insurance through Medicaid
D.Obamacare's trouble
Involuntary part-time employment in the US___________________A.is harder to acquire than one year ago
B.shows a general tendency of decline
C.satisfies the real need of the jobless
D.is lower than before the recession
It can be learned that with Obamacare,___________________ . A.it is no longer easy for part-timers to get insurance
B.employment is no longer a precondition to get insurance
C.it is still challenging to get insurance for family members
D.full-time employment is still essential for insurance

2 Shop-lifters can be divided into three main categories: the professionals, the deliberate amateurs, and the people who just can't help themselves. The professionals do not pose much of a problem for the store detectives, who, assisted by closed circuit television, two way mirrors and various other technological devices, can usually cope with them. The professionals tend to go for high value goods in parts of the shops where security measures are tightest. And, in any case, they account for only a small percentage of the total losses due to shop-lifting.
3 The same applies to the deliberate amateur who is, so to speak, a professional in training. Most of them get caught sooner or later, and they are dealt with severely by the courts.
4 The real problem is the person who gives way to a sudden temptation and is in all other respects an honest and law-abiding citizen. Contrary to what one would expect, this kind of
shop-lifter is rarely poor. He does not steal because he needs the goods and cannot afford to pay for them. He steals because he simply cannot stop himself. And there are countless others who, because of age, sickness or plain absent-mindedness, simply forget to pay for what they take from the shops. When caught, all are liable to prosecution, and the decision whether to send for the police or not is in the hands of the store manager.
5 In order to prevent the quite incredible growth in shop-lifting offences, some stores, in fact, are doing their best to separate the thieves from the confused by prohibiting customers from taking bags into the store. However, what is most worrying about the whole problem is, perhaps, that it is yet another instance of the innocent majority being penalized and inconvenienced because of the actions of a small minority. It is the aircraft hijack situation in another form. Because of the possibility of one passenger in a million boarding an aircraft with a weapon, the other 999,999 passengers must subject themselves to searches and delays. Unless the situation in the shops improves, in ten years' time we may all have to subject ourselves to a body-search every time we go into a store to buy a tin of beans!
Why does the honest public have to pay higher prices when they go to the shops?
A.There is a "shrinkage" in market values.
B.Many goods are not available.
C.Goods in many shops lack variety.
D.There are many cases of shop-lifting.
