ICE-FISHING

If you drive north from Toronto for three hours, you come to Lake Nipissing. In winter, the lake becomes ice, and thousands of Canadian fishermen travel there each weekend. They build Little houses of wood on the ice and point them in bright colours. Then they sit inside to catch the fish that swim under the ice.

Bob Marvisch has come here at this time of year for twenty-five years. 'You need clothes that are light but worm: two pairs of socks and gloves, several thin sweaters and a snow suit on top. Catching the fish is easy,' he says. 'First you break the ice and make a small round hole in it. Next you take a fishing line and put some bread on it. Then you put the line through the hole and into the water. You pull the line up when the fish eat the bread. They are between ten and twenty centimetres Long. Some people Like to eat them, but when I have caught three or four fish, I prefer to have some chocolate or other snack! Today I have caught twenty- five! It's a great sport and you can meet some nice people here!

Fishermen only use the houses on Lake Nipissing in winter.

A.Right

B.Wrong

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It' s a hard work and it mak
es you short of breath. To fly over the Channel takes only twenty minutes (as long as you' re not held up at the airport), but it' s an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft if you don' t mind the noise, and that takes forty minutes. Otherwise you can go by boat, if you forget your sea-sickness ills. All these means of transport have their problems and the weary(不耐烦的) traveler often dreams of being able to drive to France in his own car. "Not possible", you say. Well, wait a minute. People are once again considering the idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge.

This time, the Greater London Council is looking into the possibility of building a Channel link straight to London. (79) A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be able to go by rail or by car on a bridge, whereas a tunnel would provide a rail link only.

Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain becoming more conscious of the need for links with Europe as a result of joining the EEC(欧共体) ? Well, perhaps. The main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would reach the twenty square kilometers of London' s disused dockland(船坞地). A link from London to the continent would stimulate trade and re-vitalize(使…各新有活力) the port, and would make London a main trading center in Europe. (80)With a link over the Channel, you could buy your fish and chips in England, and be able to eat them in France while they were still warm!

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Swimming across the Channel takes less than four hours.

B.The idea of a Channel tunnel or bridge is a very new one.

C.It is considered to be more difficult to swim across the channel than any other means.

D.A tunnel or bridge would only reach as far as the coast.

Sharks are fish. There are about 350 species of sharks. The smallest sharks are only 12. 5
cm long. The largest, the whale shark, is the world's largest fish. It grows to about 1Sm long.

Sharks are different from other fish. For example, other fish have skeletons made of hard bones. Sharks have skeletons made of cartilage. In addition, most fish have a special organ called a swim bladder to stop them from sinking but sharks do not. If a shark does not swim constantly, it sinks. Shark babies grow inside eggs. The baby sharks are called pups.

Most sharks eat fish. Some also eat seals and other sharks. Many people are afraid of sharks be cause of their reputation as' man-eaters'. However, there are fewer than one hundred shark attacks on humans in the world each year.

Humans are the sharks' worst enemies. Fishermen kill them because of their valuable dorsal fins. Often, they catch a shark, cut off its fin and throw it back into the sea. If a shark has no fin, it dies because it cannot swim. Scientists believe that humans kill more than one million sharks every year.

Sharks are ______.

A.humans' friends

B.man's enemies

C.the world's largest fish

D.not the same as other fish

Have you everheard Robot fish? Scientistswill put some robot fishes into the seas nearSpai
n. These robot fishes will help people detect(探测) the pollution in the water. Ifthe robotfishes are able to finish their work successfully, the team of scientists hopes to putthefishesinto rivers, lakes and seas around the world.

The fishes are about 1.5 meters long and look like carps(鲤鱼). There will be a detector intheir bodies. They canfind the sources of pollutionin the water, and then the robot fisheswilleat part of it. Unlike other robots, they don’t need to be controlled by people faraway. Therobots all have an eight-hour battery. They can “swim” in the sea freely and send backinformation to people on the beach. After their batteries die, they will return by themselves.

There are five robot fishes altogether now. Each costs about 29,000 dollars. They are partof a three-year project between engineering company BMT Group and Essex University insoutheastern England.

“We designed the fishes creatively. We hopethe robot fishes can find the changes in the seawater and report back the information,” said Professor Huof Essex University. His team isdeveloping the fishes.
