Specialists in marketing have studied how to make people buy more food in a supermarket. T
hey do all kinds of things that you do not even notice. For example, the simple, ordinary food that everybody must buy, like bread, milk, flour, and vegetable oil, is spread all over the store. You have to walk by all the more interesting-and more expensive-things in order to find what you need. The more expensive food is in packages with bright colored pictures. This food is placed at eye level so you see it and want to buy it. The things that you have to buy anyway are usually located on a higher or lower shelf. However, candy and other things that children like are on lower shelves. One study showed that when a supermarket moved four products from floor to eye level, it sold 78 percent more.

Another study showed that for every minute a person is in a supermarket after the first half hour, she or he spends $50. If someone stays forty minutes, the supermarket has an additional $5.00. So the store has a comfortable temperature in summer and winter, and it plays soft music. It is a pleasant place for people to stay and spend more money.

Some stores have red or pink lights over the meat so the meat looks redder. They put light green paper around lettuce (生菜) and put apples in red plastic bags.

So be careful in the supermarket. You may go home with a bag of food you were not planning to buy. The supermarket, not you, decided you should buy it.

Marketing specialists study______.

A.plants suitable for human needs

B.how to build shelves

C.method of selling more products

D.how to own supermarkets

Until recently most historians spoke very critically of the Industrial Revolution. They【31

This view,【37】is generally thought to be wrong. Specialists【38】history and economics, have【39】two things: that the period from 1640 to 1740 was【40】by great poverty, and that industrialization certainly did not worsen and may have actually improved the conditions for the majority of the populace.

Today, moving and changing are as much a part of a modern business way of life as they are
a part of the native American's or the early pioneer's way of life. And the trend is toward even greater mobility, particularly within the management sector of American business.

In the early fifties, only eight or nine out of a hundred young men changed their jobs within the first three years with the company. In the past few years, almost thirty-five percent of the college-graduated work force changed jobs within the same period. These people want to intensify their management training. Since most jobs take only a year to a year and a half to master, in order to continue learning, they have to make a job change. Even company presidents tend to be seen as mobile specialists, staying with one company an average of only five years.

Company presidents in the United States today tend to be young men who begin their careers with educational backgrounds in engineering science, or business management. They have worked for a few years as technical specialists and quickly moved into higher management positions. Most of them were making $ 30 000 per year by the time they reached thirty. On an average, these men have only twenty years working experience at management level when they become company presidents. On the way to the top, they have an average of eleven promotions and seven city transfers.

Friendships remain casual and are usually derived from business contracts. Families of these career men have little time to put down roots in and become part of a community.

In the past, a few men attained high positions through family and social connections; today, high positions go to men who are mobile, and have good educational, backgrounds.

According to the passage, an increasing number of future company presidents might be ______.

A.people who have spent a number of years with one company

B.young people who do not want to move often, but are steady and dependable

C.people who have spent a long time concerned with community affairs

D.young people who have good education and are willing to move around

Women are, on the whole, more verbal than men. They are good at language and verbal reason
ing, while men tend to be skilled at tasks demanding visual—spatial(视空)abilities. In fact, along with aggression, these are the most commonly accepted difference between these sexes.

Words are tools for communicating with other people, especially information about people. They are mainly social tools. Visual and spatial abilities are good for imagining and manipulating objects and for communicating information about them. Are these talents programmed into the brain? In some of the newest and most controversial research in neurophysiology(神经生理学), it has been suggested that when it comes to the brain, males are specialists while women are generalists.

But one knows that, if anything, this means in terms of the abilities of the two sexes. Engineering is both Visual and spatial, and it's true that there are relatively few women engineers. But women become just as skilled as men at shooting a rifle or driving a car, task that involve visual-spatial skills. They also do equally well at programming a computer, which is neither visual nor spatial. Women do, however, seem less likely to fall in love with the objects themselves. We all know men for whom machines seem to be extensions of their identity. A woman is more likely to see her car, rifle, or computer as a useful tool but not in itself fascinating.

According to the massage, women are usually good at______.

A.body language

B.logical reasoning

C.tasks demanding for the use of words

D.both A and B

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept that equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of sexes”.

If the process goes too far and man's role is regarded as less important-and that has happened in some cases-we are as badly off as before. only in reverse. It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of “Momism” -but we don't want to exchange it for a “neo-Popism” . What we need, rather,is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credits-nor all the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman's place is in the home. We are beginning, however,to analyze man's place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child. The family is a cooperative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. Excessive authoritarianism has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is pertinent(与……有关)not only to a healthy family but also to a healthy democracy.

Sharing tasks and decisions in a family leads to______.

A. monism

B. neo-popism

C. inequality

D. further sharing

Most people have had a dog or wanted one as their companion at some time in their lives. I
f you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialists' advice is useful to help you choose the most suitable kind of dog. But in part the decision depends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform. specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose the one that has the right size and characteristics. You must also be ready to devote a great deal of time to training the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs throughout its life, unless you live in the countryside and can let it run freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfied with their place where it is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its love for its mother to its master. If baby dogs have not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months old, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be too shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.

Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?

A.You can always get help from, the specialists.

B.It is common sense that is the most important when choosing a dog.

C.You should decide what kind of dog you want.

D.Size and characteristics of the dogs should be considered too.

If it were only necessary to decide whether to teach elementary science to everyone on a m
ass basis or to find the gifted few and take them as far as they can go, our task would be fairly simple. The public school system, however, has no such choice, for the jobs must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and technology for our progress, we must produce specialists in many fields. Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make the policies for the nation, large numbers of us must be educated to understand, to support, and when necessary, to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services.

In education, there should be a good balance among the branches of knowledge that contribute to effective thinking and wise judgment. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. This question of balance involves not only the relation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts but also relative emphases among the natural sciences themselves.

Similarly, we must have a balance between current and classical knowledge. The attention of the public is continually drawn to new possibilities in scientific fields and the discovery of new knowledge; these should not be allowed to mm our attention away from the sound, established materials that form. the basis of courses for beginners.

According to the first paragraph, the task of education is fairly complicated because ______.

A.the current public school system is too complicated to be understood

B.the public school system has no choice of what to teach

C.it is difficult to decide whether elementary science should be taught in public schools

D.the educators have to take care of both ordinary and gifted students
