The lady sitting on Mr. Brown's left, who was about sixty years old, seemed to be the happiest and the most interesting of the American group, and after the first act of the play, she apologized to him for the noisiness of her friends. He answered that he was very glad to see American ladies so really enjoying their visit to England, and so they had a friendly talk. Mr. Brown's neighbour explained what they doing there.
"You know, I have known these ladies all my life," she said. "We all grew up together back in our hometown in the United States. They have all lost their husbands~ and call themselves the Merry Widows. It is a sort of club, you know. They go to a foreign country every summer or two and have a lot of fun. At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or on any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams, he never reached Europe.
What reason does the author give for Washington not going to college?
A.His family could not afford it.
B.A college education was rather uncommon in his times.
C.He didn't like the young Virginian gentlemen who went to college.
D.The author doesn't give any reason.

You can' t entirely blame men for this change in manners. The days are gone when women could be treated as the weaker sex. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes. Hold a door open for some women and you're likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she'll probably insist on paying her share of the bill.
It' s no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, man' s politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.
What do gentlemen now do when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train?
A.They will stand up reluctantly.
B.They will offer her their seats after a while.
C.They will pretend not to see her.
D.They will get off the bus.
1. Do not wear a money belt. This makes you an instant target.
2. Cameras of all kinds are a favorite with snatchers. Feel free to use them within the
Starehe Campus and the hotel grounds but not in the streets.
3. Ladies handbags are also a regular snatch. Avoid carrying one, and if you must, be alert and hold on to it tightly.
4. Jewellery and even glasses with valuable frames are also often targeted. Bear this in mind.
5. When in a vehicle keep the doors always locked, and the windows only slightly open --especially at traffic lights, junctions and in slow moving traffic.
6. Beware of street children, their begging often quickly transforms into something more unpleasant.
7. Stay with the main party all the time, and avoid wandering off on your own.
8. Finally, the best defence is to be alert at all times and conscious of your environment.

As late as l800.women’s only place was in the home. The idea of women in the business
world was unthinkable.N0“nice’’woman would dream of entering what was strictly a“man’s wodd”.Even if she could, what would she do?Men were positive that no woman could handle a job outside her home. This was such a widely accepted idea that when the famous Bronte sisters began writing books.in 1 846,they disguised themselves by signing their books with men’s names.
Teaching was the first profession open to women soon after l 800.But even that was not an easy profession for women to enter because most high schools and colleges were open only to men.Oberling College in Ohio was the first college in America to accept women.
Hospital nursing became respectable work for women only after Florence Nightingale became famous.Because she was a wealthy and cultured woman,as well as a nurse, people began to believe it was possible for women to nurse the sick and still be“ladies”.Miss Night-ingale opened England’s first training school for nurses in 1860.
The invention of the typewriter in 1 867 helped to bring women out of the home and into the business world.Because women had slender, quick fingers, they learned to operate typewriters quickly and well.Businessmen found that they had to hire women for this new kind of work.
By l 900,thousands of women were working at real, jobs in schools, hospitals, and officesin both England and America. Some women even managed to become doctors or lawyers. The idea that“nice”women could work in the business world had been accepted.
