Everyone uses the expressions AM and PM. But do you exactly know what they mean and how th
ey came into being?

As you know, the turning of the earth makes the sun and the stars seem to move across the sky. Daylight, of course,【21】, when the sun rises in the east and when the sun is high【22】the sky, between these two positions, half of the daylight hours have been spent.

Therefore, by noticing【23】the sun stood in the sky, early man know they could tell the time of the day, At night the motion of the stars【24】the same purpose. The important thing in keeping time is to know the exact moment of【25】. For each of us, wherever we are, noon is when the sun is directly overhead. Think of an imaginary line【26】the sky, stretching from the north point of your horizon just to the south point.

When the sun cross your meridian (子午线), it is noon for you. When the sun still【27】of this line, or the meridian, it is morning. After the sun has crossed this line, it is【28】.

The Latin word for "midday" is "deridian",【29】which comes our word meridian. So AM is an abbreviation (缩写词) for "ante meridean", or before midday, and PM for after midday. Each or the world's time zones (时区) is about fifteen degrees wide in longitude (经度), which is about the distance the sun moves through tile sky in all hour.【30】lives in the same time zone observes noon at the same moment. In this way, the time is different by one hour as you move through each time zone.

Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they ha
ve only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later. I am one of those unfortunate people who have an extremely poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time, but I still manage to get lost on my way there.

When I was a teenager, I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that some miraculous (奇迹的) chance would bring me to the spot I was heading for.

A lot of people do not like to admit that they do not know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their home town very well, will give you a long list of directions which you cannot possibly hope to remember; and you finally find that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.

If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I always tell them that I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid causing trouble, but even this can have unpleasant results.

I was once on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would di- rect him to the Sunlight Building. Without hesitation, I gave my usual reply, but I had only walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search him out of the crowd behind me as I had and appointment to keep at the office with a new client and I did not want to keep him waiting. Imagine my situation when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions to my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked!

According to the passage, the sense of direction is learnt______.

A.through practice

B.by nature

C.in the childhood

D.after visiting a place repeatedly

There is one thing that everyone wants more than anything else. Some people try to get it
by making money. They think that when they have enough money to buy such things as houses, farms, and cars, they will have the one thing that everyone wants.

Other people believe that if they know enough they will find this thing. They study all their lives in search of it. Still others think that if they have power, they will find this thing. They keep telling themselves: when I am a boss, I will no longer have to search for this thing.

What is it that everyone wants more than anything else? What is it that all of us keep working and striving for each day? It is happiness.

Happiness is a strange thing. It does not mean the same to all men. What will make one man happy may not make another man happy. Some men say that happiness comes from helping others; other men say that happiness comes from making life more pleasant for everyone. What do you mean when you say: "That makes me happy?"

Read what different people have said about happiness. Perhaps you will learn something that will bring you peace of mind, comfort, money or it may bring you what you search for -- happiness.

The main idea of the above article is ______.

A.Happiness means the same to everyone

B.Happiness is the thing that everyone wants most of all

C.Money makes one happy, so does helping others

D.Both A and C

The English, as a race, have the reputation of being very different from all other national
ities. Including their close neighbors, the French, Belgians and Dutch. It is claimed that living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed many attitudes and habits which distinguished him from other nationalities.

Broadly speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person who is fully relaxed only among people who knows very well. When he meets with strangers of foreigners, he often seems uneasy, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a commuter train any morning or evening to see the truth of this, serious-looking businesses and women sit reading their newspaper or dozing in a corner, no one speaks. In fact, to do so would seem most usual. An English wit, pretending to be giving advice to overseas visitors, once suggested, “on entering a railway compartment shake hands with all the passengers. ”Needless to say, he was not being serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior. which, if bro ken, makes the person immediately the object of suspicion.

It is a well-known fact that the English have an obsession with their weather and that, given half a chance, they will talk about it in length. Some people argue that it is because English weather forecast is undependable, as a result, English weather is a source of interest to everyone. This may be so. Certainly Englishmen cannot have much faith in the meteorological experts-the weathermen-who, after promising glorious, sunny weather for the following day, are often proved wrong when an anti-cyclone or as inaccurate as the weathermen in his prediction. This helps to explain the seemingly odd sight of an Englishman leaving home on a bright, sunny summer morning with a raincoat slung over an arm and an umbrella in his hand. So variable is the weather that by lunch time there could be thundering.

The overseas visitors may be excused for showing surprise at the number of references to weather that the English make to each other in the course of a single day. Very often conventional greetings are re placed by comments on the weather. “Nice day, isn’ t?” “Beautiful ! ”may well be heard instead of “Good morning”, how are you? “Although the foreigner may consider this exaggerated and comic, it is worthwhile pointing out that it could be used to his advantage. If he wants to start a conversation with an Englishman (or woman) but is at a loss to know where to begin he would do well to mention the state of the weather. It is a safe subject, which will encourage even the most reserved Englishmen to enter into a conversation.

What is the reason that the Englishmen enter into a conversation?

A.Because the English have developed many different attitudes and habits.

B.Because living on an island separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it.

C.Because the English are quite shy and reserved.

D.Because an Englishman often seems uneasy, even embarrassed when he meets with strangers or foreigners.
